Not So Deep Thoughts

Either Tony Romo has the world's best publicist or he's simply one of the nicest guys out there. The Dallas Morning News reported that the Dallas Cowboys quarterback recently befriended a homeless man outside a movie theater and offered to pay his way to see a movie. The homeless man was scheduled to hand out some fliers at a consignment store across the street so he initially declined the offer but once he realized he had just turned down the quarterback of America's Team he decided to take Romo up on the offer. According to the story, the homeless man, who goes by "Doc," ran across the street, asked for the day off and ran back to the
theater. Romo and Doc ended up sitting together watching the movie
"Role Model." Doc told the newspaper that he informed Romo that he
hadn't showered in days but Romo said "Don't worry about it, I'm used to locker rooms." While a story about a multi-million dollar athlete shelling out $12 so a guy down on his luck could see a movie isn't exactly front-page news, Romo's generous ways didn't stop there. According to another report in the story, Romo also changed the tire of a couple on the way home the
night of the season opener and showed up to a high school pep rally
with actor Will Smith earlier this week. The modest Romo confirmed the encounter
with Doc but wouldn't elaborate. In a time when positive stories about athletes are as rare as a day without one appearing on the police blotter, it sure is nice to see that genuine role models still exist. Irony is alive and well in Big D.

Not So Deep Thoughts
Posted by Tuff stuff
I don't typically talk about golf in this blog but after reading about golfer J.P. Hayes moral dilemma last week, I had to share it with you.
Hayes was playing in a PGA Tour qualifying tournament last week in Texas when on the 12th hole he hit a shot and then realized that the ball he was playing was a prototype ball which is illegal. He called an official over after realizing his mistake and was eventually disqualified from the tournament for using an illegal ball. The disqualification cost Hayes his PGA Tour card for the year and he will now be forced to play an extremely lighter schedule of events in less prestigious tournaments with less prize money available.
Hayes could've easily noticied the infraction, switched back to another legal ball and went about his round. His scores for the tournament were on pace for him to earn his card and nobody would've been the wiser had he just kept quiet about it. When asked about turning himself, Hayes said that any guy out here on tour "would've done the same thing." Whether or not that's the truth, we'll never know. But one thing is for certain, Hayes won't have any trouble sleeping anytime soon with that clear conscience of his.
Not sure how I would react in the same situation but I'm thinking more people than not would've done the ole switcharoo with the ball and went about their business without hesitation. Let me know what you would've done in his shoes.

Beat The Blogger Results
Posted by Tuff stuff
While we weren't able to reach our goal of 100 entries, we did establish a new high in the Beat The blogger NFL pick'em contest this past week. "Hips Houdini" correctly picked 13 of 16 games correctly to easily defeat the Blogger (8 correct) and the rest of the field and win the prize. Once again, I'll challenge all of our regular players to recruit (3) more players so we can hit our target goal of 100 participants each week and increase the prize to (3) authentic signed 8-by-10 photos to the winner of this week's contest. So tell your friends and co-workers to get their picks in 1/2 hour before the start of the Thursday game to be eligible to win. I'll post this week's matchups tomorrow and then post my winners sometime Thursday so check back to see what you're up against. Then click on "Comments" at the bottom of my post and add in your picks. Be sure to fill out all of the required fields with your contact information and put www.tuffstuff.com in the "Home Page" line and you'll be all set. Good luck.

Not So Deep Thoughts

By now, I'm sure everybody has heard about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb's latest foot-in-the-mouth moment. It came shortly after McNabb's Eagles came up empty in overtime and his team had to settle for the NFL's first tie since 2002. Once the overtime session ended and neither team had managed to score, McNabb was under the impression that the two teams would continue playing until somebody scored. "I've never been a part of a tie. I never even knew that was in the
rule book," McNabb said after the game. "It's part of the rules, and we
have to go with it. I was looking forward to getting the opportunity to
get out there and try to drive to win the game. But unfortunately, with
the rules, we settled with a tie." "I guess we're aware of it now," McNabb said. "In college, there are
multiple overtimes, and in high school and Pop Warner. I never knew in
the professional ranks it would end that way. I hate to see what would
happen in the Super Bowl and in the playoffs." Have no fear idiot, there are no ties in the playoffs or the Super Bowl. But as for McNabb not knowing the rule on overtime during the regular season. Are you kidding me? A 10-year veteran and team leader who makes nearly $10 million a year doesn't know the rules? That would be like a sports writer not knowing he needed to have his story in by deadline. That would be like an actor not knowing he needed to memorize his lines. That would be like a ... well, you get the idea. The fact that the overtime rule was established in 1974 and McNabb and the Eagles have been a part of 12 overtime games since he joined the team in 1999 makes him just that much more of an idiot. Eagles coach Andy Reid tried to take some of the responsibility for McNabb's ignorance and he probably should. Andy, instead of wasting time bailing out your players' ignorance of the rules, your time might be better served teaching them the rules so the next time your Eagles find themselves in overtime, they might play with a little more sense of urgency. Having a team leader who doesn't know what the hell is going on and possibly not giving his all on every single play of the extra session is inexcusable and cause to look for a new team leader in my book.

Not So Deep Thoughts
Posted by Tuff stuff
Watched some NBA action last night and came away with a couple thoughts. The first is, and I realize it's way too early to have a true indication, the Celtics and the Lakers appear to be on another collison course for a rematch in the Finals. Both teams provide several proven scoring threats so opposing teams can't look to shut down one player and make them one-dimensional, and although the Celtics have a major edge in the experience department, both have been there before and know what it takes. If anybody can break up this possible collision course it's the Hornets and the Rockets in the West and the Pistons and maybe the Cavs in the East.
Portland center Greg Oden is back after being out with a foot injury since opening night and scored three points in 16 minutes of play in his return. While I'm sure he isn't totally recovered from the injury, I don't think he's ever going to be the dominating center that many envisined him to be coming out of Ohio State. Don't get me wrong, I do believe in time, Oden will be a dominating force on the defensive end but his offensive skills remain very raw and I don't think he'll ever be more than an average center on the offensive end. Think Dikembe Mutumbo in his prime. Only time will tell but I remain steadfast in my belief that Kevin Durant will ultimately be the better pro when all is said and done.
Another ML award was announced recently and I'm once again confused by the balloting results. Rays skipper Joe Maddon was the obvious choice for Manager of the Year in the AL and anybody who witnessed Tampa's unbelievable worst-to-first turnaround this year would have to agree with that one. It's the NL results I have an issue with. Lou Piniella beat out Phillies skipper Charlie Manuel and Florida's Fredi Gonzalez to win his third MOY award. Don't get me wrong, both Piniella and Manuel did nice jobs with their respective squads but were leading playoff teams from the previous year. Gonzalez on the other hand led the young Marlins into contention which is far more impressive than Piniella leading the favored Cubs back into the playoffs.
Considering that the Cubs had the 7th-highest team payroll in the league while the Marlins ranked last in that category at just over $21 million compared to the Cubs $118 million and Gonzalez's effort was just that much more impressive. Remember back in March when everybody was making their postseason predictions? Almost everybody had the Cubs winning the Central and many made them the favorite to represent the NL in the World Series. Don't remember too many people even mentioning the Marlins in those talks and they were in contention in the NL East right up until the final week of the season.

This week's Beat the Blogger matchups
Posted by Tuff stuff
With more an more people participating in the contest the competition will likely continue to be fierce from here on out so study up and get your picks in on time for your chance to win. 'Nancy' missed just two games last week to take the top spot and win an 8-by-10 photo of Ladainian Tomlinson.
This week I'm challenging all of our regular participants to recruit three new players each so we can build the player pool and build the prize package as well. If we can bump our list players up by 75 percent this week, I will bump the prize package up to 3 authentic signed photos going to the winner. So tell your friends and tell your co-workers to get in the mix and so we can increase the prize package and make one lucky winner three times as happy.
There are Thursday games every week now until the end so make sure you get your picks in a 1/2 before the kickoff of the Thursday game. Spread the word and good luck.
NY Jets +3 at New England Denver +6 at Atlanta Oakland +10.5 at Miami Baltimore +6.5 at NY Giants Houston +8.5 at Indianapolis Tennessee -3 at Jacksonville Chicago -4 at Green Bay Philadelphia -9 at Cincinnati New Orleans -5 at Kansas City Detroit +14 at Carolina Minnesota +3.5 at Tampa Bay St. Louis +6 at San Francisco Arizona -3 at Seattle San Diego +4.5 at Pittsburgh Dallas -1 at Washington Cleveland +5.5 at Buffalo

Winner Of This Week's NFL Pick'em Contest
Posted by Tuff stuff
Beating the Blogger seems to be getting easier and easier every week with one player correctly picking 12 of the 14 games to Beat The Blogger (9 correct) and the rest of the field.
For her impressive effort 'nancy' will be receiving an authentic signed 8-by-10 photo from our prize vault. Congrats and good luck to the rest this week. This week's matchups will be posted on Wednesday and the Blogger's picks will be posted Thursday a.m. because there is another Thursday night matchup this week. So make sure you get your picks in a 1/2 hour before the start of the first game to be eligible to win.
I'm throwing out a new challenge that will benefit all of those who play. If we can get all of our regular participants to recruit three new
players each this week, I'll spice up the prize package awarded to the
winner. It's basically a simple idea: you e-mail (minimum) three of your friends and/or co-workers, explain how easy it is to win and get them to send in their picks. I'll check the totals after the first game on Thursday and if we can triple our number of participants from last week, I'll triple the prize for one lucky winner. So spread the word and let's build up the prize package this week and every week from here on out.

Not So Deep Thoughts
Posted by Tuff stuff
Just saw that the AL and NL Rookies of the Year were announced and no big surprises in the AL with Evan Longoria being the unanimous selection. But I can't help but think Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto got hosed in the NL voting. Cubs catcher Geovanny Soto won the award after hitting .285 with 23 homers and 86 RBIs. Votto on the other hand, hit .297 with 24 HRs and 84 RBIs. Not a big surprise that Soto came out on top but the way he won it might surprise you. Soto received all but one (31) of the first-place votes while Votto managed just one first-place vote (the Reds beat writer no doubt) and 21 second-place votes.
I was under the impression that these type of individual awards are, and should be, based on what the individual player accomplished that particular season. But upon further review, it sure looks like this is yet another award (e.g. MVP) that is now being voted on based on the performance of the team the player resides on. For example, Soto's Cubs finished 23 games above .500 and ran away with the NL Central. Votto's Reds on the other hand, finished 14 games under .500 and never contended. While the argument can be made that Soto did have a better season than Votto, convincing me that he had a season that was 30 first-place votes better than Votto's isn't going to happen anytime soon.
And what's up with the fact that it took nearly three weeks to provide us with the results of the voting for ROY anyway? With an outcome like Soto's landslide victory, you would think the writers who voted were pressed to make their pick during the 7th Inning Stretch of Game 5.
I was clicking around some websites when I came across this gem: ESPN's shuffle-to-shuffle coverage of this year's World Series of Poker, or as the cool kids call it, the WSOP. The coverage includes a live blog of the final nine players' every move at the final table. Thank God, because I was wondering who was going to walk away with the bracelet and I couldn't be expected to wait until tonight to watch the exciting action on TV, I needed to know immediately. Don't get me wrong, I love playing poker just as much as the next guy, but when I'm searching ESPN.com for the latest in the world sports, I expect to see, well, sports news. Next thing you know, ESPN will be featuring a live blog from the WSOS, or as the cool kids call it, the World Series of Solitaire. C'mon ESPN, you're better than that.

Not So Deep Thoughts

The latest rumor floating around Major League Baseball is that the Chicago Cubs are the frontrunners in the Jake Peavy sweepstakes. If this signing comes to fruition and Peavy ultimately joins a Cubs pitching staff that already includes Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster, Rich Harden, Ted Lilly and Jason Marquis, look out National League.
If Peavy is added, Marquis would likely be the odd man out, leaving Chicago with the best starting rotation in recent memory and that includes the famed Braves staff of the early 90s. Peavy is arguably the best pitcher in the game right now, while Zambrano and Dempster were both worthy of strong consideration for the Cy Young last year despite pitching half of their games in hitter-friendly Wrigley Field. Factor in a healthy Harden, and that's always a concern with the hard-throwing, injury-prone hurler, and you've got the makings of one of the best staffs from top to bottom ever assembled. Now, if the Cubs can just remember to pack their postseason bats next year, they might actually end their century's worth of misery and win the title.
Speaking of the Cubs, looks like Mark Cuban won't be the team's new owner anytime soon. Reports are that MLB officials would have to approve his $1.3 billion offer and the chances of Bud and the boys giving their thumbs up are less likely than Steve Bartman replacing Lou Pinella in the dugout. Cuban is one of the five finalists to become the new owner but it appears Cuban's inclusion among the finalist is much like including black candidates for vacant head coaching positions in the NFL a few years back: looks good on the surface, but a token inclusion at best.
While reading the story on Cuban, I saw that the Tribune Co. bought the Cubs for $20.5 million back in 1981. With the team expected to be sold for $1.5 billion 27 years later, I'd say it was a very solid investment that would be worth all the yearly woes the team has suffered through on the field.
