This week's Beat the Blogger matchups
Posted by Tuff Stuff
With more an more people participating in the contest the competition will likely continue to be fierce from here on out so study up and get your picks in on time for your chance to win. 'Nancy' missed just two games last week to take the top spot and win an 8-by-10 photo of Ladainian Tomlinson.
This week I'm challenging all of our regular participants to recruit three new players each so we can build the player pool and build the prize package as well. If we can bump our list players up by 75 percent this week, I will bump the prize package up to 3 authentic signed photos going to the winner. So tell your friends and tell your co-workers to get in the mix and so we can increase the prize package and make one lucky winner three times as happy.
There are Thursday games every week now until the end so make sure you get your picks in a 1/2 before the kickoff of the Thursday game. Spread the word and good luck.
NY Jets +3 at New England Denver +6 at Atlanta Oakland +10.5 at Miami Baltimore +6.5 at NY Giants Houston +8.5 at Indianapolis Tennessee -3 at Jacksonville Chicago -4 at Green Bay Philadelphia -9 at Cincinnati New Orleans -5 at Kansas City Detroit +14 at Carolina Minnesota +3.5 at Tampa Bay St. Louis +6 at San Francisco Arizona -3 at Seattle San Diego +4.5 at Pittsburgh Dallas -1 at Washington Cleveland +5.5 at Buffalo

Winner Of This Week's NFL Pick'em Contest
Posted by Tuff Stuff
Beating the Blogger seems to be getting easier and easier every week with one player correctly picking 12 of the 14 games to Beat The Blogger (9 correct) and the rest of the field.
For her impressive effort 'nancy' will be receiving an authentic signed 8-by-10 photo from our prize vault. Congrats and good luck to the rest this week. This week's matchups will be posted on Wednesday and the Blogger's picks will be posted Thursday a.m. because there is another Thursday night matchup this week. So make sure you get your picks in a 1/2 hour before the start of the first game to be eligible to win.
I'm throwing out a new challenge that will benefit all of those who play. If we can get all of our regular participants to recruit three new
players each this week, I'll spice up the prize package awarded to the
winner. It's basically a simple idea: you e-mail (minimum) three of your friends and/or co-workers, explain how easy it is to win and get them to send in their picks. I'll check the totals after the first game on Thursday and if we can triple our number of participants from last week, I'll triple the prize for one lucky winner. So spread the word and let's build up the prize package this week and every week from here on out.

Not So Deep Thoughts
Posted by Tuff Stuff
Just saw that the AL and NL Rookies of the Year were announced and no big surprises in the AL with Evan Longoria being the unanimous selection. But I can't help but think Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto got hosed in the NL voting. Cubs catcher Geovanny Soto won the award after hitting .285 with 23 homers and 86 RBIs. Votto on the other hand, hit .297 with 24 HRs and 84 RBIs. Not a big surprise that Soto came out on top but the way he won it might surprise you. Soto received all but one (31) of the first-place votes while Votto managed just one first-place vote (the Reds beat writer no doubt) and 21 second-place votes.
I was under the impression that these type of individual awards are, and should be, based on what the individual player accomplished that particular season. But upon further review, it sure looks like this is yet another award (e.g. MVP) that is now being voted on based on the performance of the team the player resides on. For example, Soto's Cubs finished 23 games above .500 and ran away with the NL Central. Votto's Reds on the other hand, finished 14 games under .500 and never contended. While the argument can be made that Soto did have a better season than Votto, convincing me that he had a season that was 30 first-place votes better than Votto's isn't going to happen anytime soon.
And what's up with the fact that it took nearly three weeks to provide us with the results of the voting for ROY anyway? With an outcome like Soto's landslide victory, you would think the writers who voted were pressed to make their pick during the 7th Inning Stretch of Game 5.
I was clicking around some websites when I came across this gem: ESPN's shuffle-to-shuffle coverage of this year's World Series of Poker, or as the cool kids call it, the WSOP. The coverage includes a live blog of the final nine players' every move at the final table. Thank God, because I was wondering who was going to walk away with the bracelet and I couldn't be expected to wait until tonight to watch the exciting action on TV, I needed to know immediately. Don't get me wrong, I love playing poker just as much as the next guy, but when I'm searching ESPN.com for the latest in the world sports, I expect to see, well, sports news. Next thing you know, ESPN will be featuring a live blog from the WSOS, or as the cool kids call it, the World Series of Solitaire. C'mon ESPN, you're better than that.

Not So Deep Thoughts
Posted by Tuff Stuff
The latest rumor floating around Major League Baseball is that the Chicago Cubs are the frontrunners in the Jake Peavy sweepstakes. If this signing comes to fruition and Peavy ultimately joins a Cubs pitching staff that already includes Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster, Rich Harden, Ted Lilly and Jason Marquis, look out National League.
If Peavy is added, Marquis would likely be the odd man out, leaving Chicago with the best starting rotation in recent memory and that includes the famed Braves staff of the early 90s. Peavy is arguably the best pitcher in the game right now, while Zambrano and Dempster were both worthy of strong consideration for the Cy Young last year despite pitching half of their games in hitter-friendly Wrigley Field. Factor in a healthy Harden, and that's always a concern with the hard-throwing, injury-prone hurler, and you've got the makings of one of the best staffs from top to bottom ever assembled. Now, if the Cubs can just remember to pack their postseason bats next year, they might actually end their century's worth of misery and win the title.
Speaking of the Cubs, looks like Mark Cuban won't be the team's new owner anytime soon. Reports are that MLB officials would have to approve his $1.3 billion offer and the chances of Bud and the boys giving their thumbs up are less likely than Steve Bartman replacing Lou Pinella in the dugout. Cuban is one of the five finalists to become the new owner but it appears Cuban's inclusion among the finalist is much like including black candidates for vacant head coaching positions in the NFL a few years back: looks good on the surface, but a token inclusion at best.
While reading the story on Cuban, I saw that the Tribune Co. bought the Cubs for $20.5 million back in 1981. With the team expected to be sold for $1.5 billion 27 years later, I'd say it was a very solid investment that would be worth all the yearly woes the team has suffered through on the field.

This week's Beat the Blogger picks
Posted by Tuff Stuff
After a tough week in which I only managed to correctly pick 50 percent of the games, I'm looking to bounce back strong this week and make it a little more difficult for those playing to take me down. While I did struggle last week, it probably wouldn't have mattered much anyway, as Yale Brown blew away the field by connecting on 12 of 14 picks to win the weekly prize.
Because there will be Thursday night games from here on out, I'll try to post the matchups earlier in the week and I'll always make sure to post my Blogger picks on Wednesdays so you know what you're up against. As always, good luck and spread the word.
Cleveland -3 over Denver Jacksonville -6.5 over Detroit Tennessee -3 over Chicago New England -4 over Buffalo New Orleans Even over Atlanta St. Louis +8 over NY Jets Seattle +9 over Miami Green Bay +2 over Minnesota Carolina -9 over Oakland San Diego -15 over Kansas City Indianapolis +3.5 over Pittsburgh Philadelphia -3 over NY Giants Baltimore +1.5 over Houston Arizona -9.5 over San Francisco

Not So Deep Thoughts
Posted by Tuff Stuff
I've been discussing the recent Allen Iverson trade to the Pistons with some co-workers, and while others think its a bad move on the Pistons part, I tend to disagree. While Iverson has been a me-first scoring machine type for the majority of his career, that mentality was based on necessity not selfishness. Until his most-recent stint in Denver, Iverson has never been surrounded by enough talent to be anything but a team's No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 scoring options wrapped into one but that won't be the case in Detroit and a new-look Iverson will be born. With Tayshaun Prince, Richard Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace by his side, expect to see a whole new A.I. once he gets established in the Motor City. One who will still do his fair share of scoring when needed, but one who will also draw the double team on drives to the basket only to kick it out to open shooters who can and will knock down the open looks. I truly believe that the championship-starved Iverson will give up some shots and ultimately watch as his scoring average plummets in favor of a well-balanced attack that will provide him with his best shot at a title since he carried the Sixers on his back during the team's championship run in 2000. You remember that powerful offensive lineup that included Aaron McKie, George Lynch, Matt Geiger, Theo Ratliff and the ever-explosive Nazr Mohmammed. How Iverson led that squad to within three games of a world championship is still one of the biggest mysteries in the history of professional sports not to mention a major accomplishment on his impressive list of credentials. Only time will tell who gets the better of this trade and if Iverson is ultimately a good fit in Detroit, but my gut feeling is the league will soon be introduced to a new, older, wiser A.I. who is willing to do whatever he needs to do to pick up the elusive ring. Whether it's developing a pass-first, shoot later mentality or becoming the on-court leader they were looking for in Denver, the Pistons version of Iverson could be the best ever. And that's saying something. Worst-case scenario, the me-first Iverson beast lives on and the Pistons bow out in the conference finals much like they have for the last several years and free up about $30 million after dumping the salaries of Billips, McDyess and free-agent-to-be Iverson. That extra cap space could then be used to land a Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade or perhaps even LeBron James in the free agent market. Like any trade, we'll have to wait and see on who got the best of it. Stay tuned.

Brown Takes Down The Blogger
Posted by Tuff Stuff
After a sizzling week that should get him thinking about a trip to Vegas, Yale Brown picked 12 of 14 games correctly to take down The Blogger (8 picks) and the rest of the pack to win this week's contest. For his efforts Brown will be receiving an authentic 8-by-10 signed photo of Drew Brees.
To try and take down The Blogger yourself, check back on Wednesday to see the matchups and points points spreads for this week's games and make your picks before the start of the week's first game. If you pick more games correctly than the Blogger, you could be the next winner. There is a Thursday night game this week so make sure you get your picks in a half-hour before the start of the Cleveland-Denver game to be eligible. Spread the word and good luck.

Not So Deep Thoughts
Posted by Tuff Stuff
Just reading how Manny Ramirez, Mark Teixeira, Ben Sheets and a few lesser-name players had filed for free agency on the first day of eligibility. Other quality names are sure to follow including Francisco Rodriguez, A.J. Burnett and C.C. Sabathia, but I'm not too sure owners will be opening their wallets quite as wide as some expect.
The turbulent economic environment we are dealing with affects billionaires too, ya know, and owners will likely use the recession as an excuse to try and re-establish a new line in the sand as far as the seemingly out-of-control player salaries of the past several years (ie... Andruw Jones $18,100,100 & Barry Zito $18,000,00 come to mind).
A lot of people look at this year's crop of free agents as one of the best in years, but while the talent level is high, the huge salary increases that typically balloon to new heights each year might just be a thing of the past. Don't get me wrong, these players will still be getting paid and getting paid well, but I predict the owners will site the economy as a valid reason to curtal their spending in many different areas with player salaries being No. 1 on that list.
I still expect the top prizes in this year's class like Sabathia and Manny to make in upwards of $20 million per year, but don't be shocked if some of the others receive offers closer to those being tossed around 2-3 years agao vs. those from last year. Good to know the ecomomy is hurting the millionaires as well as us poor folks.
