Beat The Blogger Super Bowl Edition Matchups
Posted by Tuff Stuff
OK, I'll admit it, with just five days remaining before the big game, I've got Super Bowl Fever. It took a little while for me to catch it but it's now a full-blown case and it seems to be spreading so be careful or it will get you as well. If the excitement surrounding the big game hasn't got you yet, I'm hoping that a Suped-Up Special Edition of Beat The Blogger might help get you on board. As those of you who are familiar with the game already know, the contest is simply: post your picks right here on the 7th Inning Stretch Blogzone, correctly pick more games than the Blogger, and the highest total for the week wins an authentic signed 8-by-10 photo from our prize vault. It's free to play and it's just that easy to win a valuable piece of memorabilia to add to your collection. I'm not sure if it's the fever causing me to lose my judgement or what, but I've decided to dig deep into our prize vault and put together a prize package that is worthy of the biggest sporting event in the world. This week's Beat The Blogger winner will receive (3) authentic signed 8-by-10 color photos, an authentic Riddell mini helmet signed by Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor, a Fran Tarkenton McFarlane Sportspicks figure, a Joseph Addai McFarlane Sportspicks figure and a 12-inch McFarlane figure featuring future Hall of Famer Terrell Owens. In all, the prize package carries an estimated value of more than $350. The following are the (10) Beat The Blogger Super Bowl Edition questions. Click on the "Comments" link below, post your answers and see if you can Beat The Blogger and win. Make sure to get your answers posted prior to 5 p.m. (CT) to be eligible to win. In case of a tie, the person who predicts the winner and comes closest to predicting the winning score of SB XLIII will win the prizes. I'll post my Blogger picks later this week so you know what you're up against. Good luck. Beat The Blogger Super Bowl Edition:1. The outcome of the coin flip will be: Heads or Tails2. The longest Field Goal made will be: 0-44 yards or 45 yards or more3. Receptions Pittsburgh's Hines Ward will have: 5 or fewer or 6 or more4. Topps, UD out of Basketball card market in 2010
Posted by Tuff Stuff
Big news in the hobby on Tuesday as long-time licensees To pps and Upper Deck were bounced out of the Basketball card market in favor of Italian-based The Panini Group. The NBA has signed a multi-year, exclusive licensing
agreement with The Panini Group, known best as a publisher of sticker
products and comic books overseas. The company, headquartered in
Modena, Italy, will create a new subsidiary known as Panini America to
handle its domestic trading card business. The deal has been highly scrutinized by collectors, with many under the false impression that both of the card companies are out of the card making business altogether while others are concerned what will happen to each of the company's exclusive deals with some of the game's top players. Stayed tuned right here to the 7th Inning Stretch blog and www.tuffstuff.com in general for future updates on this story. Until then, post a comment and let us know what your thoughts are concerning the big news.

Beat The Blogger Results
Posted by Tuff Stuff
First off, I'd like to apologize to all of the loyal followers of the blog and the Beat the Blogger contest for not getting in my picks this past week. I went home sick on Thursday afternoon and didn't really get back on my feet again until Sunday and was so out of it, I missed the deadline to get my selections posted. The good news is that everyone that played can now boast they Beat The Blogger. The bad news is that "Harry" and "George S. Kasko" were nearly perfect, scoring 10 points each to tie for the top spot and win the weekly prize. With Super Bowl XLIII set for Sunday, I thought I'd switch things up a bit this week and make this week's selections all related to the big game. The picks will be posted on Wednesday by noon so make sure you check back to see what they are and get your selections posted. We're still trying to grow the game and we need your help. Please spread the word about the Beat The Blogger contest so we can offer up even better prizes to the winners each week. As stated in the past, if we can push the total number of participants to more than a 100, I will offer up double the prizes or (2) authentic signed 8-by-10 photos (as seen above) to the weekly winner. If everybody could just get a couple of your friends to join in the fun, we'll reach that goal and double the fun. Thanks Scott Fragale Editor Tuff Stuff's Sports Collectors Monthly

Here are the Beat The Blogger matchups for this week. Please make sure you spread the word about the contest to your friends and co-workers because if we can push the number of entries to more than 100, I'll up the prize package to (2) signed photos and will add an additional photo to the package for every 50 entries we get after that. Besides, it's fun, it's simple to play and best of all, it's free to enter. As always, make a post to this blog thread and post your picks at least 1/2 hour before the start of the first game on Saturday to be eligible to win. And don't forget to designate the pick you're most confident in as your "Doubler" to receive an extra point if the pick is correct. Spread the word and good luck. Not So Deep Thoughts: Super Bowl or Denny's?
Posted by Tuff Stuff
As a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan, I'm obviously excited about my team's upcoming chance to get "one for the other thumb" (reference to the team's opportunity to win its sixth title and place a ring on 6 different fingers) but I quickly was brought back to Earth after looking into the cost of taking in Super Bowl XLIII in person. Although I've seen all five of the Steelers victories in the big game and toughed out the brutal loss to the Cowboys in SB XXX, I've never witnessed any Super Bowl in person. Although I'm probably better off watching the big game at home where I can surround myself with people who understand (and possibly even appreciate) my fanaticism, I recently came to the conclusion that I'd like to take in sports biggest game up close and personal at least once in my lifetime. And after realizing that being a Steelers fan has spoiled me into thinking that making it to the Super Bowl is, and should be a regular ocurrence, I understand that my team's amazing run over the last three decades could end at any time so I better take advantage. Realistically, I can't even afford a trip to Tampa and the game ticket would likely force me to eat Romen noodles for the next three decades, but out of curiosity, I looked into some prices anyway. Well, upon further review, I'm still way too poor to witness the big game in person and likely will be until at least SB XCIII. While game tickets range from $2,500 and up, I found a great deal for me and 35 of my closest friends. For a mere $369,330 or $10,259 each person and change, we could whoop it up in one of the luxury suites at Raymond James Stadium. Just to give you some perspective about the type of money we're talking about, that same $10,259 would get you 1,430 Grand Slam breakfasts at Denny's, a first-class round trip flight to the Greek Islands, a brand new Nissan Versa subcompact, 1,818 packs of cigarettes or that 150-inch plasma TV you've always dreamed of. Liek I said, I'm a huge Steelers fan and I would love nothing more than to witness my favorite team triumph on the biggest stage one more time, but unfortunately I'm not willing to give up those nutritious Denny's meals just yet. I'll take those over Ramen noodles three times a day anytime. Here's hoping Pittsburgh's tradition of excellence carries on until a time when I can afford to go and see them.

Beat The Blogger Results
Posted by Tuff Stuff
With upsets galore this past weekend, it took some bold predictions to earn the prize in this week's Beat The Blogger contest but two players were up to the challenge. By virtue of their 9 out of 11 possible totals, "kszippy" and "Sam" took the top spot in this week's contest and for their efforts, each will be receiving a free authentic 8-by-10 signed photo from the Tuff Stuff prize vault. After a solid effort last week, The Blogger reverted back to his midseason struggles and posted a total of 5 for the week. This week's matchups will be posted on Wednesday and will be NFL-free this time around so make sure you study up on the other possibilities out there. I will also post The Blogger's picks on Thursday so you know what you're up against. Spread the word about how easy it is to win playing Beat The Blogger and as always, good luck.

Beat The Blogger Picks
Posted by Tuff Stuff
I usually make my picks on Thursday but to be honest, I needed a little extra time this week to try and sort out things in the NFL Playoffs before making any hasty decisions. It seems like it was only a few years back when you could count on the favorites in the playoffs but the Cardinals and Ravens continue to prove things have changed by posting back-to-back upsets. After breaking down the two matchups every way I could think of, I could still envision scenarios that had each of the four teams winning so I did what all good "handicappers" do when in doubt: copy a proven winner's formula. So, as the posts came in from various Beat The Blogger regulars, I kept my eye out for one in particular. I figured after winning four different weeks (I'm running out of photos to send her), Beat The Blogger star "Nancy" was the person I should hitch my wagon to. Unfortunately for me and fortunately for the rest of you, "Nancy" hasn't posted her picks yet so I'm foced to go it alone and hope for the best. Besides, you'd figure she has to cool down sooner or later, right? I'm a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan dating back to my childhood when my bedroom was decked out in nothing but black and gold, but I will admit I'm a little leery about a team beating another team three times in the same year. Despite my reservations about the three-peat factor and the fact that I typically don't allow myself to make picks based on what my heart says vs. what my head tells me, I'm going with the Steelers anyway. Not just because I'm a big fan but because the Ravens are dinged up a little right now and those teams are so evenly matched that I think the injury factor could be the difference. Predictions Pittsburgh 27-17 Arizona 31-17Here are the Beat The Blogger picks for the week so you know what you're up against. Good luck. Syracuse over Notre Dame Wake Forest over Clemson Pittsburgh over Louisville UCLA over Arizona St. Kidd (points/assists) over Deron Williams (points) Chris Paul over Allen Iverson (points) Baltimore +6 over Pittsburgh Over Arizona +4 over Philadelphia Under

Not So Deep Thoughts: UD Apparently Out Of Ideas
Posted by Tuff Stuff
I recently got a press release from Upper Deck touting their latest Insert card which provides collectors with exactly what they've been searching for ever since the Paleolithic Era: cards with dinosaur teeth and bones embedded in them. Finally, a product I can sink my teeth into. Sorry, about that one, it was just too easy. The 2008-09 version of Champs Hockey will be the lucky product to feature this revolutionary concept. I'm guessing it won't be long before the set rules the hobby in much the same way as the Tyrannosaurus Rex ruled the Earth back in the Cretaceous Period. Really? Dinosaur teeth? Is this some type of proactive April Fool's Day joke or does the cardmaker actually believe this is going to generate a buzz? (Here's an excerpt from the press release minus the attribution identifying who said it because I'm assuming the person is still embarrassed after having to stand behind such a ridiculous statement in the first place.) “The 2008-09 Champ’s Hockey product is a perfect vessel to deliver
something truly unique like this to the hobby. When we saw these pieces coming in,
everybody was in awe. The inclusion of these cards in this hockey
release helps bring the Ice Age to the ice.” Ice Age to the ice, get it? Now that line might just be the only good thing to come out of this whole "innovation." To be fair, I realize it's getting tougher and tougher to come up with new and creative ways to tempt the collecting public but this ain't one of them. We've already had hair, teeth and bones to go along with gloves, jerseys, bats, balls and shoes inserted into cards. What's next: game-used underwear swatches? I'll pass on those, too.

Woman Finds Card From 1860s

Woman Finds Card from 1860s
Posted by Tuff stuff
By now most of you must have heard about the woman in California who found a card from the 1860s in a box of antiques. In case you haven't, here's the link from Yahoo! This
lady does a lot of selling of stuff, as she buys estate lots. Well,
having some history in antiques, don't you think she might of had some
idea of its worth before being mobbed on eBay? A little research goes a long way. Look for a follow-up story on the woman and her card in the next issue (April cover) of Tuff Stuff's Sports Collectors Monthly where you can find out what the card sold for at auction.
