Beat The Blogger Results
Posted by Tuff Stuff
Last week's matchups and the tiebreakers weren't enough to decide the winner of the $350 prize package so "Kerrin" left no doubt as to who the winner would be this week. Kerrin picked 10 of 10 correct and then added her "Doubler" to post the first perfect score (11) in the history of Beat The Blogger to claim the prize package from last week and this week's photo as well. "George Stroesenreuther" battled til the end to try and break the tie from last week but in the end, his score of 8 wasn't enough to match Kerrin's perfection. For his efforts, George will be receiving a signed 8-by-10 of Super Bowl XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes. Congrats to both of them and thanks to everybody for playing. Look for this week's Beat The Blogger matchups to be posted right here on Wednesday and then check back on Thursday when I make my picks so you can see what you're up against. In the meantime, spread the word to your friends and co-workers letting them know how easy it is to play and how easy it is to win. BEAT THE BLOGGER HALL OF FAMEWith her perfect score on Feb. 8, "Kerrin" becomes the first member of the Beat The Blogger Hall of Fame. Congrats to Kerrin. For your viewing please check out this year's Sports Illustrated swimsuit photos just to get you in the mood for summer of course, to check them out now, click here

Not So Deep Thoughts: When $68,493 a day isn't enough
Posted by Tuff Stuff
Just got done waxing my board (not a euphemism) after a morning session of surfing the Web and boy is there some rough water out there. First off, I can't believe the Dodgers would insult Manny Ramirez with a one-year deal worth a measly $25 million. He and agent Scott Boras wanted no part of the offer and quickly told the Dodgers to rip up the offer and try again. Ramirez is seeking a multi-year deal, and at age 36 (37 in May), is hoping for a three or four-year deal to finish out his career and who can blame him. OK Manny, we get it, you're good, damn good. Your body of work speaks volumes. You're one of the best offensive players and pure hitters the game has ever seen. You're an RBI machine and one of the few power hitters who can carry a team on his back as you proved last year down the stretch with the Dodgers. But with people disappearing from my neighboring cubicles seemingly every day, I have a hard time backing anybody turning down a job, not to mention one that would pay you $68,493 every day. And that figure is based on Manny working 365 days a year. And as he demonstrated during his last month in Boston, Manny tends to phone it in from time to time during the season so I can only imagine how many days will be spent slacking in the offseason. If you can't make ends meet on a $68,493 a DAY, I don't know what to tell you other than maybe retirement is your best option. Speaking of greedy athletes who are getting soured by the free agent process, did you hear Ben Sheets' latest dilemma? After opting to go the free agent route instead of resigning with the Brewers, Sheets will now be without a team in 2009. Sheets was close to signing a two-year deal with Texas earlier this week for more than $12 million but the elbow injury he suffered last September hasn't healed and he will apparently need season-ending surgery, prompting the Rangers to pull the plug on the deal. What's ironic about the whole situation is that Sheets often cited the media and fans always questioning his ability to stay healthy as one of the main reasons he wanted to test the free agent waters and leave Milwaukee in the first place. Now, he's tested those waters, found little interest because of his history of injuries and has no job. If Sheets wasn't so quick to bolt and score the big pay day, the Brewers would've likely urged him to get the elbow taken care of last year when it first occurred, and he would've been finishing up his rehab in preparation of being the team's Opening Day starter once again. Instead, he tried to keep the injury a secret, rehab it on his own so teams wouldn't be scared off and shop his services around the league and sign with the highest bidder. Well, I don't wish season-ending injuries on any athlete but sometimes charma seems to step in and give a player exactly what he deserves. That's exactly what happened with Sheets, so in this instance, justice was served. On a brighter note, I saw Hank Aaron turned 75 on Thursday. Happy birthday Hammer, wish there were more players like you in today's game. We'd all be better off and so would the game itself.

Panini Looking To Buy Donruss? Makes Sense To Me
Posted by Tuff Stuff
With last week's shake-up in the basketball market still
generating
quite a buzz, the folks at Panini are reportedly at it again. Rumors have been circulating within the hobby for months that Donruss would be sold and the latest industry talk has Panini setting its sights on a possible partnership or perhaps even purchasing Donruss. While the folks at Donruss
are declining to comment on the possibility
of a future sale,
they did issue the following statement on Feb. 4. ![[description]](http://net.fwpublications.com/newsletters/Images/Newsletters/TFF_-_Editorial_%28new%29_2_4_2009/adgfdse.jpg) "Donruss
has worked extremely hard to build a well respected and prestigious
pre-press department and we periodically inquire with other companies
(including trading card companies) about doing their pre-press work." If the sale or partnership ultimately comes to fruition, it seems like it would be a win-win situation for both parties. It would give Panini instant credibility in the sports card
market, aid in U.S. distribution of its new line of basketball products
and would allow the financially challenged Donruss company to break into the basketball card market and continue to
exist in the sports card market, albeit under the Panini umbrella. Last week's announcement that Panini would be the sole licensee in the basketball card market was not received well by the collecting community with many collectors vowing to leave the market altogether so anything the Panini group can do to put a hault to the possible mass exiodus will be wise. To let us know what you think of the possible partnership between the two companies, click here.
Look for more on this story as
details become available at www.tuffstuff.com and Tuff Stuff's Sports Collectors Monthly.

Beat The Blogger Matchups
Posted by Tuff Stuff
The following are the matchups for this week's Beat The Blogger contest. The games will be a wide variety to test your total sports knowledge so study up and make sure you get your picks in before the start of the first game on Saturday. For those new to the game, you post your picks and hope your total of correct picks can Beat The Blogger's total and is higher than the rest of the field. The winner will receive an authentic signed 8-by-10 photo of LaDainian Tomlinson, Marshall Faulk, Drew Brees, Gale Sayers, DeAngelo Williams or Super Bowl XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes among others. So read through the matchups and make your selections. Don't forget to include a "Doubler" which allows you to designate the pick your most confident in your "Doubler" and you'll receive a bonus point if that pick is correct. Spread the word to your friends and good luck to you all. Also, don't forget to follow the picks of "Kerrin" and "George Stroesenreuther" who are still battling for the top spot and the $350 prize package from last week's Super Bowl Edition after they tied with 9 correct picks each. Beat The Blogger Results: Super Bowl Edition
Posted by Tuff Stuff
Here are the official results of the Beat The Blogger: Super Bowl Edition contest. We established a new record high in number of participants but we weren't able to establish the grand prize winner just yet. The Blogger posted 7 of 10 correct picks to set the bar fairly high but "George Stroesenreuther" and "Kerrin" bested the competition with 9 of 10 correct picks. The regular contest couldn't produce a winner so we went to the tie-breaker to find our grand prize winner but despite the incredible odds against it, both players picked the Cardinals to win and were the exact same number off (21) when predicting the final score. So it will all come down to how the two fare in this week's Beat The Blogger contest. Whoever makes the most correct picks in this game will be the grand prize winner and take home the $350 prize package, with the second-place finisher getting a signed photo of Super Bowl XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes. For the rest of us, it will be business as usual. I'll post this week's picks on Wednesday and contestants will then need to Beat The Blogger and post the highest number of correct picks among the rest of the field. The person with the highest total among those that Beat The Blogger will win an authentic 8-by-10 signed photo. So look for the matchups to be posted on Wednesday and spread the word about the contest to your friends so we can stay close to the number of participants we had this past week. Thanks for playing and good luck. 1. The outcome of the coin flip will be: Heads2. The longest field goal will be: 44 yards or less (21 yards)3. Hines Ward will have: 5 or fewer receptions (2)4. There will be more points scored in the: second half (26-24)5. Kurt Warner's passing yards will be: more than 300 yards (377 yards)6. Willie Parker's rushing total will be: 96 yards or more (53 yards)7. The Halftime Show will: not end with "Born in the USA" (Glory Days)8. How many Steelers will catch a pass: 6 or more (8)9. Either team will score three times in a row: Yes (Cardinals)10. Will there be a score in the final two minutes of the game: Yes (Holmes)

Not So Deep Thoughts: Super Bowl Hits and Misses
Posted by Tuff Stuff
Took a little extra time so I could soak up all of the Super Bowl coverage I could because it's not every year your favorite team wins the big game. Well, unless your a Steelers fan like I am, then it's basically every fourth year your team wins the big game, so I got that going for me, which is nice. While I'm ecstatic Pittsburgh survived the Cardinals second-half rally to win its sixth title, I will admit I was a little worried my team had blown it down the stretch. Even after the Steelers took a 20-7 lead in the third quarter, I knew the high-powered Arizona offense was fully capable of a comeback, so I jumped on the roller coaster and rode it until the dramatic end with my Super Bowl feast threatening to reappear on more than one occasion. Speaking of the end, I'm still a little pissed that the normal official replay protocol was applied on the controversial fumble/incomplete pass by Kurt Warner in the final seconds. While I do believe the ball was coming loose after the hit on Warner which would make the play a fumble (as it was called on the field), it sure would've been nice for the replay officials to have taken a little more time to review the play and then announce their decision to the millions who anxiously awaited it. Instead, we got a hurried booth review that resulted in many Arizona fans and gamblers alike starting chants of a conspiracy. Fortunately, I'm a Steelers fan who didn't wager on the game so the play being ruled a fumble and effectively ending the game with the Steelers on top didn't cause me any anguise. But, and this is a big but, if I was a Cards fan, I would likely be a little fired up about the way the final play was reviewed. In a normal review that takes place in the final two minutes of a half, the play is automatically reviewed by the replay official and despite rumors to the contrary, the play was in fact reviewed. The mistake that was made, was that for some inexplicible reason, the decision that would help determine the biggest sporting event in the world came back in record time and then was not announced to the millions who awaited it. Why would the NFL get away from the norm when trying to determine the outcome of the Super Bowl? Still not sure about that one. The current replay system was put in place to get the call right and I believe they ultimately did do that. But in getting away from the normal procedure, the NFL opened up the flood gates to controversy and all of the conspiracy theorists out there. If only they would have taken the same amount of time they had earlier in deciphering the Harrison touchdown and the Holmes catch, came back and announced that the replay had confirmed the call on the field, everybody would've been OK with the decision made. As it stands now, the rushed decision making leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of Arizona fans everywhere, taints a record-breaking accomplishment made by the Steelers and takes away from one of the most exciting Super Bowls ever.

Beat The Blogger Results
Posted by Tuff Stuff
First off, I wanted to say thanks to all those who attempted to Beat The Blogger in the Super Bowl Edition of the game. We had a record number of participants and one lucky winner will be taking home the $350 prize package. Because of the record turnout, I'll need another day to tally up the scores and see who Beat The Blogger to win the prizes. I haven't started to check the totals on all of the entries just yet but I did tally up The Blogger's score and he had 7 of 10 correct so those of you who have more than 7 correct answers, you're still in the running. I will post the official results later today or first thing Tuesday so check back to see if you Beat The Blogger.

Beat The Blogger Picks: Super Bowl Edition
Posted by Tuff Stuff
With a record number of participants already in the mix, I make the following picks with mixed emotions. On the one hand, I love to compete and want each and every one of my selections to come to fruition which would make it tough for the Beat The Blogger faithful to compete. On the other hand, I truly enjoy the responses from our readers after they've defeat the Blogger and win the weekly prize. With more than $350 worth of prizes on the line this week, I'll be giving it my best, but I will also be rooting for someone in the masses to better my total and take home the prize package. (Editor's Note: In the 15-week history of the Beat The Blogger contest, only twice has the Blogger posted a higher total of correct picks than all of the entrants so I wouldn't worry about it if I were you). And the two times he did manage to better the field, he still gave out the weekly prize so it's more of a bragging rights thing than anything else. 1. The outcome of the coin flip will be: Tails 2. The longest field goal will be: 44 yards or less 3. Hines Ward will have: 5 or fewer receptions 4. There will be more points scored in the: second half 5. Kurt Warner's passing yards will be: more than 300 yards 6. Willie Parker's rushing total will be: 96 yards or more 7. The Halftime Show will: not end with "Born in the USA" 8. How many Steelers will catch a pass: 6 or more 9. Either team will score three times in a row: No 10. Will there be a score in the final two minutes of the game: Yes Final Score Pittsburgh 31-24

Not So Deep Thoughts: Newsflashes of nothingness
Posted by Tuff Stuff
Took a quick trip around the Internet to see what I might have missed in the world of sports over last day or so, and it's a good thing I did because there was some huge news coming out of MLB. ESPN had "breaking news" that the New York Times was reporting that Barry Bonds used steroids. In my constant effort to compete with the worldwide leader in sports, I'm breaking the following stories: 9/11 was an historic day in U.S. history Hurley on Lost is carrying a few extra pounds Victoria Secret model Adrianna Lima is somewhat attractive Michael Jordan could play a little basketball The U.S. economy has seen better days The Super Bowl is a popular sporting event Charles Barkley enjoys gambling Michael Phelps knows his way around a pool Brad Pitt does well with the ladies Rocky Balboa thrived in the role of underdog I'm currently working on another story titled "Winter is cold, Summer is hot" but I still have to substantiate the facts surrounding that claim. So Barry Bonds did use steroids? Wow, never saw that one coming. Sure, he grew three full hat sizes in a five-year span and transformed himself from a spray-hitting leadoff hitter into the game's greatest power hitter over that same time span, but wasn't it all because he worked out more than the rest? I realize ESPN has to do its due diligence and report stories like these when they continually turn up month after month, year after year and eye witness after eye witness, but enough already. I don't care how slow a news day it may have been, Bonds using steroids hasn't been news for more than eight years now so let's take the "Breaking News" label off this story and call it what it really is: Sh%t we've known for years. C'mon ESPN, act like you been there before and quit trying to fool us with your non-stories.
