Not So Deep Thoughts: A-Rod Just Needed Energy Boost, Really?
Posted by Tuff Stuff

I've been staying away from most of the A-Rod steroid fallout for the last couple of weeks because the fact that A-Rod used steroids wasn't shocking news to me. Ever since the Feds started chasing Barry Bonds seemingly 20 years ago about his usage, I've maintained that Barry wasn't the only one who used it and couldn't understand why all of the allegations were geared toward him.

When Jose Canseco came out and said that 85% of all MLB players used rodriguez134fc.jpgsteroids I thought the number might be a little high, but unlike many who felt the number was no where near accurate, I've always maintained a guesstimate of 75%. Not trying to sound like I could predict the future or anything, but as more and more details about the Steroid Era are revealed, it looks like me and Canseco were pretty darn close to being dead on. Because of my gut feeling way back when, A-Rod's recent admission wasn't a shocker.

Just for the record, I wouldn't be surprised to see Albert Pujols, Luis Gonzalez, Mike Lowell, J.D. Drew, Johnny Damon, Derek Jeter, Bobby Abreu, Vladimir Guerrero, Tori Hunter, Carlos Pena, Paul Konerko, Jim Thome, Rickie Weeks, Travis Hafner, Russell Branyan, Scott Rolen, Delmon Young, Andrew Jones, Ty Wigginton, Gary Matthews Jr., Hank Blalock, Pat Burrell and Magglio Ordonez turn up on a future list of users either. That was just a list of names off the top of my head listing at least one player from each team. And that was just the American League for the most part, I could've easily continued and came close to the 104 on the latest list but thats really not the point here.

I have nothing against of these guys or any of the admitted users and likely would've taken streoids myself if I was them. If you see the guy two lockers down from you go from a 20-20 guy for five years straight then jump to a 30-30 guyt in one offseason, you're more than likely going to do whatever you have to do to keep up with the Jones.

What I do have a problem with, is the guys like A-Rod who admit guilt only to then blame it on their own ignorance. A-Rod first admitted to using steroids when interviewed by Peter Gammons last week only to retreat in today's press conference by saying that his "cousin" injected him with an over-the-counter drug he picked up in the Dominican Republic. He said he injected the drug to provide him with an energy boost. Really A-Rod? Ever hear of Red Bull or Five-Hour Energy? A-Rod added that he was "ignorant and naive." While I do believe A-Rod isn't the brighest guy around, I don't believe for a minute that his group of advisors (the same advisors that came up with the cousin/energy boost defense) couldn't provide him with a trainer that could help him with all of his steroid needs. I also don't believe that anybody making more than $25 million a year would put anything in his body if he didn't know what it was or how it would affect him.

Everybody on the most-recent list was on the new list because they used Primobolan or Testosterone. For those of you unfamiliar with these drugs are steroids, plain and simple. Neither drug has ever been taken to boost energy that I'm aware of. They are taken to repair muscle tissue and to regenerate the cells in those muscles so users can repair the muscles damaged by extreme workouts and they can get back in the gym sooner than those who don't. They also can help hand-eye coordination and reaction time, which comes in real handy when trying to catch up to a 95-mph fastball. What they don't do, is provide an energy boost.

If only we could get all of these guys to come out and tell us the truth, we could all get past this tainted era quicker. If A-Rod came out and said, "I started using because I saw how it was making some of these average players great, and great players legends. I knew I was already a great player and didn't want them to close the gap on me so I said 'if you can't beat them join them,'" we'd all forgive and forget in time.

If these guys would just come clean, be honest, provide all the details of their usage and inform the public of baseball's little secret, we could all put this mess in the rear-view mirror where it belongs. C'mon, it's been 10 years of this BS, enough already. Toward the end of A-Rod's news conference he added, "I know it's a long road but I want to start working toward earning others' trust back ... " Exactly A-Rod, it will be a long road. But if you keep merging onto BS Boulevard with all of the rest of the phonies, you're only going to end up on a dead end in the eyes of us fans.

Beat The Blogger Results
Posted by Tuff Stuff

The NBA All-Star Game activities proved to be too much for The Blogger and many others this past week, as several "upsets" made it a difficult week of picking winners in the Beat The Blogger Contest.contest.jpg

Although she couldn't predict the winner of the NBA's midseason exhibition game correctly, "Barbie" was nearly flawless with the rest of her selections, picking 9 of 11 to win this week's prize. The Blogger's struggles continued, as he managed just 4 of 10 this week to open the door for the rest of the field. Seems like the ladies are really taking it too us guys. Haven't went back and looked at the actual numbers, but let's just say the men have a lot of work to do just to get the winner's list back to even again. I'm not saying anything, I'm just saying.

With the win, "Barbie" wins an authentic signed 8-by-10 photo from our prize vault. The number of entries was down significantly this week so let's all make a strong effort to recruit a few new players each week so we can continue to provide the great prizes to our weekly winners. If everybody who plays regularly can pass along the link http://blog.tuffstuff.com/7thinning/ to a few friends or co-workers, we should be able to build up our list of regular contestants which will then allow me to offer a bigger prize package to the winners. So share the link and spread the word. Where else can you find a website offering valuable prizes for simply having fun?

Look for this week's matchups to be posted Wednesday and I'll post my Blogger picks on Thursday so you know what you're up against. Spread the word about the contest and thanks for playing.

Not So Deep Thoughts: Treasure the good, it's rare these days
Posted by Tuff Stuff

Took a quick break from my editorial duties to do some Internet surfing to see if I could find something uplifting or generally positive to combat all of the negative stories floating around. Swing and a miss.

I lowered my standards and loosened up the criteria and gave it another shot, but all I found was more A-Rod steroid talk, a bitter Brett Favre recalling that he basically only came back last year to spite the Packers and news that the Falcons were planning on trading Michael Vick.

Then I stumbled onto the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame class of 2009 which features Michael Jordan, John Stockton, David Robinson, Don Nelson, Jerry Sloan, Rutgers women's coach Vivian Stringer, WBNA star Cynthia Cooper, Dennis Johnson, Chris Mullen and Bernard King. Talk about a class with class and star power. The members of this list have done an outstanding job of being in the news for all the right reasons and it's nice to see them being rewarded for both their efforts on the field of play and not be tainted by their actions off of it.

Enjoy these type of stories when they come around people, they are few and far between these days. Hopefully in the not-to-distant future we can get back to focussing on the player's achievements and get away from all of the negativity that surrounds their lives off of it. Here's hoping it gets a little easier to find a positive sports story in the future, I'll keep looking until I find some.

With the NFL season officially over and the MLB season not quite here, you'll find a mixed bag of sports representing the various matchups in this week's Beat The Blogger contest. It will take a well-rounded sports aficionado to win this week's prize which will be an authentic signed 8-by-10 color photo featuring the likes of Marshall Faulk, Drew Brees, Marc Bulger, Gale Sayers, DeAngelo Williams, LaDainian Tomlinson or Super Bowl XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes.

Simply post your picks (don't forget to designate one of your picks as your "Doubler" to receive an extra point if correct) right here before the start of the first game on Saturday and if you can Beat The Blogger and post the highest number of correct predictions, you win. Beat The Blogger Results

Last week's matchups and the tiebreakers weren't enough to decide the contest.jpgwinner of the $350 prize package so "Kerrin" left no doubt as to who the winner would be this week. Kerrin picked 10 of 10 correct and then added her "Doubler" to post the first perfect score (11) in the history of Beat The Blogger to claim the prize package from last week and this week's photo as well. "George Stroesenreuther" battled til the end to try and break the tie from last week but in the end, his score of 8 wasn't enough to match Kerrin's perfection. For his efforts, George will be receiving a signed 8-by-10 of Super Bowl XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes. Congrats to both of them and thanks to everybody for playing.

Look for this week's Beat The Blogger matchups to be posted right here on Wednesday and then check back on Thursday when I make my picks so you can see what you're up against. In the meantime, spread the word to your friends and co-workers letting them know how easy it is to play and how easy it is to win.kerrin2[1]1.jpg

BEAT THE BLOGGER HALL OF FAME
With her perfect score on Feb. 8, "Kerrin" becomes the first member of the Beat The Blogger Hall of Fame. Congrats to Kerrin.

Not So Deep Thoughts: When $68,493 a day isn't enough
Posted by Tuff Stuff

Just got done waxing my board (not a euphemism) after a morning session of surfing the Web and boy is there some rough water out there. First off, I can't believe the Dodgers would insult Manny Ramirez with a one-year deal worth  a measly $25 million. He and agent Scott Boras wanted no part of the offer and quickly told the Dodgers to rip up the offer and try again. TT0309.jpgRamirez is seeking a multi-year deal, and at age 36 (37 in May), is hoping for a three or four-year deal to finish out his career and who can blame him.

OK Manny, we get it, you're good, damn good. Your body of work speaks volumes. You're one of the best offensive players and pure hitters the game has ever seen. You're an RBI machine and one of the few power hitters who can carry a team on his back as you proved last year down the stretch with the Dodgers. But with people disappearing from my neighboring cubicles seemingly every day, I have a hard time backing anybody turning down a job, not to mention one that would pay you $68,493 every day. And that figure is based on Manny working 365 days a year. And as he demonstrated during his last month in Boston, Manny tends to phone it in from time to time during the season so I can only imagine how many days will be spent slacking in the offseason. If you can't make ends meet on a $68,493 a DAY, I don't know what to tell you other than maybe retirement is your best option.

Speaking of greedy athletes who are getting soured by the free agent process, did you hear Ben Sheets' latest dilemma? After opting to go the free agent route instead of resigning with the Brewers, Sheets will now be without a team in 2009. Sheets was close to signing a two-year deal with Texas earlier this week for more than $12 million but the elbow injury he suffered last September hasn't healed and he will apparently need season-ending surgery, prompting the Rangers to pull the plug on the deal.

What's ironic about the whole situation is that Sheets often cited the media and fans always questioning his ability to stay healthy as one of the main reasons he wanted to test the free agent waters and leave Milwaukee in the first place. Now, he's tested those waters, found little interest because of his history of injuries and has no job. If Sheets wasn't so quick to bolt and score the big pay day, the Brewers would've likely urged him to get the elbow taken care of last year when it first occurred, and he would've been finishing up his rehab in preparation of being the team's Opening Day starter once again. Instead, he tried to keep the injury a secret, rehab it on his own so teams wouldn't be scared off and shop his services around the league and sign with the highest bidder. Well, I don't wish season-ending injuries on any athlete but sometimes charma seems to step in and give a player exactly what he deserves. That's exactly what happened with Sheets, so in this instance, justice was served.

On a brighter note, I saw Hank Aaron turned 75 on Thursday. Happy birthday Hammer, wish there were more players like you in today's game. We'd all be better off and so would the game itself.

Panini Looking To Buy Donruss? Makes Sense To Me
Posted by Tuff Stuff

With last week's shake-up in the basketball market still generating quite a buzz, the folks at Panini are reportedly at it again. Rumors have been circulating within the hobby for months that Donruss would be sold and the latest industry talk has Panini setting its sights on a possible partnership or perhaps even purchasing Donruss. While the folks at Donruss are declining to comment on the possibility of a future sale, they did issue the following statement on Feb. 4. [description]

"Donruss has worked extremely hard to build a well respected and prestigious pre-press department and we periodically inquire with other companies (including trading card companies) about doing their pre-press work."

If the sale or partnership ultimately comes to fruition, it seems like it would be a win-win situation for both parties. It would give Panini instant credibility in the sports card market, aid in U.S. distribution of its new line of basketball products and would allow the financially challenged Donruss company to break into the basketball card market and continue to exist in the sports card market, albeit under the Panini umbrella.

Last week's announcement that Panini would be the sole licensee in the basketball card market was not received well by the collecting community with many collectors vowing to leave the market altogether so anything the Panini group can do to put a hault to the possible mass exiodus will be wise.

To let us know what you think of the possible partnership between the two companies, click here.

Look for more on this story as details become available at www.tuffstuff.com and Tuff Stuff's Sports Collectors Monthly.
