Not So Deep Thoughts: Let The Madness Begin
Posted by Tuff Stuff
Anybody who knows me, knows that I'm a pretty laid back guy and it takes quite a bit to get me fired up about something. The one sure-fire event that does the trick every year is the NCAA Tournament. Unlike any other sporting event, the NCAA Tournament has it all. The thrills, the upsets, the emergence of star players, the electric atmosphere, the Davids, the Goliaths, the smiles, the tears and let's not forget, the amazing over-the-top, ear-shattering tones of Gus Johnson. Ahh, the Madness, let the games begin. There are so many levels in which the Tournament works it's hard to even begin to succinctly break it down, but I'll do my best to do so with a Letterman-esque Top-10 list guarantees that will come out of this year's Big Dance. 10. I guarantee Betty from accounting will post a better score in her brackets than you did despite the fact she made her picks based on the prettiest state flowers of the teams they represent, while you stayed up for four straight days breaking down all 65 team's RPI, strength of schedule, senior leadership, quality point guard play, travel distance and tournament history. 9. I guarantee one of the No. 16 seeds will be getting 38 points from our friends in Vegas and it still won't be enough for you to win your bet. 8. I guarantee people from both coasts will watch several Big Ten schools play their methodical, sleep-inducing brand of basketball and come to the conclusion that the conference is lite years behind power conferences such as the Big East, Big 12, ACC, Ohio Valley, Big Sky, Pac 10, Patriot and Mountain West. All right, I'm exaggerating a bit but you'll see what I mean next Thursday when Illinois jumps out to a 15-12 halftime lead over Sienna only to lose 32-30 in triple overtime. 7. I guarantee one player from a mid-major will put together two big games, carry his team on his back to the Sweet 16 and Verne Lundquist will start talking about how he's "made the most of his 15 minutes of fame and that he can't wait to see how his game translates to the next level." Then, two years later, we'll read about the same player knocking over a couple liquor stores, getting in a high-speed police chase and trading in that 15 minutes of fame for 15 years in state prison. 6. I guarantee that despite a one-and-done performance, fans will go away from the Tournament knowing that Morehead St. University is actually a fine educational facility located in Eastern Kentucky instead of being the punch line of a poorly constructed joke. 5. I guarantee that some know-it-all in your office pool will rave about the fact that he was the only one who had Robert Morris pulling the first-round upset over a No. 2 seed, but will also fail to mention it was his only correct pick of his entire bracket. 4. I guarantee millions of basketball junkies will spend next Thursday and Friday pretending to work while following all of the early first-round matchups on their computers/Blackberrys, only to get fired when they start shouting expletives in the middle of the boss' quarterly budget meeting, effectively ending their charade and ultimately their careers. 3. I guarantee the terms "mid-major" and "selection committee" will be tossed around more in the next few weeks than "stimulus package" has been in the last year. 2. I guarantee that when the field of 65 teams is announced on Sunday that Dick Vitale will cry foul about how several teams were unjustly left out only to become speechless minutes later when asked which teams he would eliminate in order to get those teams in. 1. And the No. 1 guarantee heading into this year's NCAA Tournament is: I guarantee I will fill out several brackets for several different pools in an effort to win several hundred dollars only to be out of the running for every one of them by about 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon. But I also guarantee I'll be back doing it all over again next year at this time because there truly is nothing like March Madness. Got some guarantees of your own, let's hear 'em, post them here.

Posted by Tuff Stuff
While next week's March Madness version of Beat The Blogger will feature a prize package worth an estimated $500, this week's weekly contest will hopefully keep you entertained until the Madness begins. Congrats again to Art who won for the second time this season, correctly picking 10 of 10 and then scoring on his "doubler" pick as well to break the tie from the week before and score himself (2) signed photos in the process.
Look for more details about next week's March Madness starting on Monday with full details about how you could be the lucky winner of the prize package. Until then, study up on your NCAA Basketball and give this week's contest your best effort.

Beat The Blogger Results
Posted by Tuff Stuff
After a seven-person tie last week, we carried over the prize package to this week and "Art" is certainly glad we did. "Art" posted a perfect score of 11 after hitting all 10 matchups and nailing his doubler to Beat The Blogger and win the (2) authentic signed photos. The Blogger posted another solid effort with 9 of 10 correct picks but it was enough to hang with Art and his perfect card. Look for our special March Madness version of Beat The Blogger coming next week. The special edition of the contest will be made up entirely of NCAA Tournament matchups and will carry over through the entire run of the tournament with the contest winner ultimately winning a prize package valued at more than $400. The prize package will include an authentic NBA basketball featuring the signatures of many of the top players in the 2007 NBA Draft including 2008 NBA Rookie of the Year and 2009 MVP candidate Kevin Durant among others. Each contestant will pick the winners of each tournament game with their total from each round of the NCAA Tournament carrying over with the highest cumulative total at the end of the tournament walking away with the NBA signed ball. Check back later this week for this week's regular Beat The Blogger matchups and more details about the NCAA Tournament contest.

Not So Deep Thoughts: TO show not playing in my home town
Posted by Tuff Stuff
Not sure if I fell asleep and woke up and it was 2004 again or what, but apparently another NFL team has severed ties with Terrell Owens and the future Hall of Famer is now looking for employment. Is it just me, or haven't we seen this show before? It appears that signing the enigmatic Owens to a contract is much like getting really ripped and getting married in Las Vegas: It seems like a good idea at the time, but once your head clears and the bitching starts, you wonder what the hell you were thinking. I'll admit that because he was such an amazing talent on the field, I have often overlooked all of the extra baggage Owens brought with him off of it. But no more. No more will I assume the now 35-year-old wideout will eventually grow up and become the team player that most in their mid 20s become. And no more will I blame any future blow-ups with teammates on the "other" guys. And no more will I defend a guy based soley on his talent level. And no more will I hope that Owens will sign with my favorite team, put his ever-increasing list of issues behind him and understand the concept of being a team member instead of being a member on a team. Those days are over, I'm done with TO and I don't care who hears me. While I'm 100-percent committed to putting TO in the rear view, I know there will be several teams who fall into the trap of thinking Owens will get it this time, come into his new surroundings and simply play the game that he plays so well. They'll talk themselves into believing he will finally understand his days in the NFL are numbered and he needs to demonstrate the same type of professionalism on the sidelines and in the locker room as he does when between the lines. But they'll be wrong. TO, with help of his agent Drew Rosenhaus, will do and say all the right things early on but as soon as his new team alters its game plan to feature a receiver not named Owens, TO will take it way too personally like he always does and start to divide his new team like he has in the past. It's a pattern of destruction usually reserved for episodes of Intervention, but the spinoff could be coming to an NFL city near you so be prepared for more of the same in 2009. If you think you've seen this show before it's because you have. It debuted in the San Francisco area a few years back and the syndicated version arrived in the Philadelphia area in 2004. If it seems familiar to you, that's because it is. Now, if I drive by my local theatre and Shrek 2 and Meet the Fockers are on the "Coming Next Week" sign, I'm really going to start freaking out.

Not So Deep Thoughts: Cleanest program in the country?
Posted by Tuff Stuff
Just had some random thoughts after thumbing through the sports section of today's newspapers and a few websites. Nothing really big going on in the sports world right now so I decided to tackle some of the back-page stories and give you my two cents. At a recent practice session, first-year Marquette coach and one of the finalists for NCAA Coach of the Year, Buzz Williams, was seen dishing out dollops of some type of gel to all of his players during a brief break in the action. Before all of you conspiracy theorists start racking your brain wondering what type of illegal substance the Golden Eagles coach was providing his players with, you can call off the investigation, it was merely a pre-emptive measure to keep his team healthy. Because Marquette has been hit with a rash of illnesses in each of the last two seasons heading into the NCAA Tournament, Williams decided he would do whatever he could to keep his team intact this year, so the coach administered some hand sanitizer to his players in an effort to keep the germs at bay. Talk about a rookie coach making a veteran move. My prediction is that if Marquette can manage to have a solid showing in the Big East tourney and then win a couple of games in the big dance, Williams claims the Coach of the Year honors. If that doesn't work out he should definitely get the award for running the cleanest program in the country. Is it just me or does it seem like Ed Hightower is refereeing every college basketball game ever played? Perhaps there is more than one guy named Hightower in the zebra stripes patrolling the hardwood but it seems like every NCAA hoops game I watch (and that's about 10-12 per week) has Hightower blowing the whistle. I read where Kurt Warner sent the Arizona Cardinals his proposed contract numbers and they included a "hometown discount" and a million-dollar reduction that would help them re-sign receiver Anquan Boldin. For every athlete that has ever held out for more, they should take note of Warner's actions. Here's a guy looking at the big picture and one who fully realizes he has enough green to last a lifetime and wants to keep the team that came up just short of winning the Super Bowl intact so they can try to make another run this season.

Beat The Blogger Picks
Posted by Tuff Stuff
After posting a perfect 10 of 10 in last week's contest, I looked forward to this week's picks with hopes of continuing the streak this time around but some tougher matchups will likely make that a difficult proposition. But here goes anyway. Here are this week's Beat The Blogger matchups. Because nobody
Beat The Blogger last week, this week's winner will receive (2)
authentic signed 8-by-10 photos featuring the likes of LaDainian Tomlinson, Santonio Holmes, Gale Sayers, Drew Brees
among others. With March Madness rapidly approaching, I went heavy on
the NCAA matchups so you can all get some practice in before filling
out your brackets in a couple weeks. Last week several contestants including The Blogger himself, forgot to designate a "Doubler"
pick to earn an extra point so learn from his mistake and make sure you
don't forget to tag one of your picks as your "Doubler." It could mean
the difference between 1st and 2nd place so don't underestimate the
power of the "Doubler" and make sure you get your picks in a 1/2 hour before the start of the first game on Saturday to be eligible to win. Spread the word about the contest to your friends and good luck.

Beat The Blogger Results
Posted by Tuff Stuff
The Blogger bounced back strong after several sub-par weeks but his forgetfulness proved costly, as he didn't designate a "doubler" which allowed several players who did to tie his score of 10. The Blogger went a perfect 10 for 10 but forgot to choose a doubler. Meanwhile, seven different players – Paul Sherman, Keith Sorenson, Shawn O'Grady, Louie Gallardo, Dave Karpinski, Greg Kuiper and Kent Chisler – each picked 9 of 10 correct and added one more with their doubler pick to tie the Blogger's total. Unfortunately for them, the name of the game is Beat The Blogger not Tie The Blogger, so there will be no winner this week and the prize will double to (2) authentic signed 8-by-10 photos for this week. Congrats to the magnificent seven who tied for the top spot and thanks to everybody for playing. The matchups for this week will be posted on Tuesday so check back and get your picks locked in and whatever you do, don't forget to designate one of your picks a doubler.

Not So Deep Thoughts: Now that's a good friend
Posted by Tuff Stuff
I was reading today how Barry Bonds' former personal trainer Greg Anderson is once again refusing to testify against his buddy when the slugger's perjury trial begins next week. And if that's not the definition of a good friend I don't know what is. Here's a guy who is willing to go to jail not once, but twice, to protect his friend. Without Anderson's testimony, the judge is barring prosecutors from
showing jurors key evidence such as positive drug tests alleged to have
belonged to Bonds. What that essentially means is without Anderson's testimony, the prosecutors have nothing to convict Bonds of lying before the grand jury several months ago regarding his "alleged" steroid use. If Anderson continues to stick with his "mums-the-word" approach, he will likely find himself behind bars once again for contempt of court. If convicted of the contempt charges, Anderson would be imprisoned for the duration of the trial which is expected to last about a month but could be even less without Anderson's damning testimony. While I'm sure Mr. Bonds has and will continue to pay Anderson for remaining loyal to him throughout the years, I'd be curious to know exactly how much hush money he's going to ultimately receive. I would wager my car the number reaches well into the seven-figure category, but I also know that there would likely be about the same number of people who would have gone all Benedict Arnold on Bonds by now as well. Many would have caved under the pressure of it all but to his credit, Anderson has remained tight lipped throughout and is finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Soon, all of this can be put in the rear view and he can start spending his time spending the money he's earned for remaining true to his friend. I just wonder if those payments from Bonds to Anderson be continuous and if they'll put a strain on their friendship? If not, I wonder how long it will take for Anderson to start the blackmail process when the payments cease? If I was Bonds I'd plan on continuing the payment plan right up until the day I die or that friendship born in needles and creams will die a quick death.
