Update from the Hawaii Trade Conference
Posted by Tuff Stuff
Just get done with several Retailer Roundtable seminars including Upper Deck's, Press Pass and Panini. The following is a brief outline of what each company brought to the mix.
Upper Deck: Upper Deck's newest creation is UpperDeckU.com, an ever-changing virtual world of online gaming in which players can use codes on a variety of UD products to create your own avaitar, exchange in real-time chats with others players, in-game e-mailing, play dozens of different games within the main game, collect and trade with other players. The basics of the game are similar to other virtual world gaming with the exception that the concept is collecting based and should help increase trading card collecting in the sports card categories as well as create a new demographic of young collectors which will ultimately grow the hobby.
While this idea isn't new and others have tried with other degrees of success, I now believe they have created a formula for success with their version, and from the numbers of users already on board, it seems to be a big hit even in its early stages. In the first six weeks of the game being live, more than 100,000 players have participated and more than 15% of those who played are now registering card codes for upgrades and more gaming options. While you didn't hear it here first, this is going to be big for the hobby, so much so that while here I plan to talk with the Upper Deck reps to see how we can partner up with this in some way because I believe it will succeed that much. Stay Tuned.
I was only able to catch a portion of the Press Press presentation but the jist of it was about an improved NFL product. Meaning more content, better autograph combinations featuring all of the big-named rookies-to-be and a redesigned look to the product itself. More on this later.
One of the most well-attended presentations of the day was for the new kids on the block, Panini. Many in attendance are curious as to what the sticker-based global company would be bringing to the table now that it has the exclusive rights to the NBA card category. Donruss/Panini execs admitted they're learning to adopt the practices of their new parent company on the fly and are ironing out details for future plans as they go with one basic concept remaining in place: they want to continue to produce and provide products with more value than their competitors, but they will also be implementing several formulas of success that Panini had in place for years. Panini's overseas philosophy has been to provide the masses with samples with their sticker albums and then sit back and wait for those same masses to come looking for the stickers to fill those albums. It's been working for them for 51 years and that, coupled with a huge promotional campaign, is in the future for their brand new Basketball card category formula.
The staff that was part of Donruss has now been given the financial freedom from the billion-dollar Panini company to implement the ideas and strategies that they couldn't previously. They plan to put stickers and cards in the hands of children across the country in much the same way that they have overseas to grow the category and get children back into collecting mode. The also plan to produce 6-7 new Basketball products by year end but that number is still a work in progress and is subject to change. That number and the question about how the exclusive players such as Jordan, Wade, Kobe and others and how they would be handled in the future with their rights belonging to UD and Topps. Panini execs said they are in talks with NBA officials to try and work out a deal but couldn't provide many more details at this point. My best guess is that a deal to purchase those exclusive rights are in the works with those companies but UD and Topps are holding out for top dollar because they are holding all the cards. We'll see.
Another important question addressed was that all Redemption cards offers in Donruss products will be fulfilled by Panini (if within the desiganted time frame). This was agreat relief to many of the dealers in attendance because slow sales have them sitting on a lot of product right now with no sales likely coming any time soon. Panini officials alos said there main objectives will now be Marketing, upgrading their existing websites while maintaining the quality and affordability of their products. Will see how that plays out but with the strong financial backing they now have I predict it won't be long before Panini becomes an even bigger player in the hobby.
Speed Retailing session is up next. The idea is to have retailers sit across from other retailers and share successful ideas they've had. They start in one chair and chat for a few minutes before moving onto the next chair and new retialer. Once the session is over they have a forum and discuss the best ideas of the bunch to implement in the future. We'll see how that goes and I'll get back to you with more details later.
If you have any questions please let me know and I'll do the best to answer them. Stay tuned.

Live from The Hawaii Trade Conference
Posted by Tuff Stuff
As some of you may know by now, I'm down in Florida at the Hawaii Trade Conference (it used to be held in Hawaii but has since been relocated to Florida) which is the sports collectibles industry's yearly conference of dealers, manufactuers and licensors. The conference is a three-day event in which a wide variety of topics are discussed including successful business priciples, roundtable discussions with retailers and the manufactuers, expert panel discussions and Q&A sessions where anything and everything sports collectibles is fair game.
With the state of the industry and the the state of the economy in general, this year's event may be more important than ever before. Because of that and the fact that many could not attend in person because of those economic factors, I'll try and give you a brief recap of the events taking place and some of the highlights. If you have any questions or want more details, please make a post and I'll check back throughout the conference and try and answer those questions as best as I can.
Dave McCarthy (NHL senior marketing director) discussed:
3 basic principles to build on: 1. Know your customer/ serve them well; 2. Make great products; 3. market them aggressively
New Hockey calendar host events from October straight through June including: NHL Faceoff which combines music & start of NHL season; Premier Series which will be a 2-game series in Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki (possible) Finland for 2010; Winter Classic: New Year's Day game featured game at Wrigley Field with 41,000 in attendance in 2009 and looking at a 2010 game at Boston's Fenway Park, sample packs were given out to all those in attendance and encouraged those receiving sample packs to complete the entire set; Card & Memorabilia shows set up for NHL All-Star weekend; NHL Entry Draft; Opened up flagship NHL store in New York
Josh Zusman Hockey Brand Manager UD discussed: How well new products such as UD Black, a high-end product that was released early in the season for the first time and UD Collector's Choice were both very well received in the hobby. Other successful products included the Montreal Canadiens 100-year Centennial set. Other successes included National Hockey Card day: 200, 5-card packs to hobby and retail stores with plan to expand in 2009; Rookie Class Campaign; build on success of UpperDeckU.com which is targeting 6-14 year old boys to expose multi-player online game; Stronger advertising campaigns aimed at children.
Dr. Kim Beason of Univ. of Mississippi discussed results of Consumer Behavior Study (that was also conducted in 2004) including: 55% of people questioned still want to collect despite tough economic times; other interesting results provided were that most consumers still feel there are too many products and the fact that many collectors are switching focus toward autograph collecting vs. card collecting.
Other notes: 85% said they currently collect cards vs. 70% in 2004; 61% indicated the reason they no longer collect cards is because the did not believe the quality of content of the cards justified the price of the cards; 33% said they no longer collect because the found another area of sports collecting (mainly autographs) and 58% indicated that they didn't believe the money they spent on cards would hold its value over time.
What this says to me is that people simply want more bang for their buck when it comes to buying cards. They also want a chance to hit it big, with many buying into Lottery mentality. While that type of buying won't go away anytime soon, people need to get back to collecting for the love of collecting and not because their looking to get rich quick. Until that happens the hobby will continue to have dissatisfied customers but those people will likely find something else to bitch about even if they do pull a rare rookie sig card.
Back with more from the Trade Conference later.

Not So Deep Thoughts: Madden's Retirement Right On Time
Posted by Tuff Stuff
By now, most of you have heard that John Madden has decided to retire after more than 25 years of broadcasting. While Madden was a likable enough guy, his on-air schtick has been overrated, over the top and over-appreciated for years and calling a career was the right move. Sure, Madden knew the game like few others, but his inability to articulate his thoughts in a concise manner have been overlooked for years. When he first burst onto the broadcasting scene with CBS back in the 1980s, his unique style was fresh and unlike anything heard before which helped separate him from the countless others who simply followed the blueprint of broadcasters before them. But instead of being progressive with that one-of-a-kind style and looking to continually develop it and perfect his craft, Madden seemed to have peaked out years ago and has since been regurgitating the same ole material for the last couple decades. So, while he did help bring back terms like "Boom" and "Bang" that haven't been that overused like that since the "Batman" TV show, he also brought us a nine-legged Turducken every year and nailed the obvious points of every game he covered. Throw in some scribbling on a telestraitor and that was Madden in a nutshell He's one of those guys you either loved or hated. I personally was in the latter group, although "hate" is too strong of a term. I guess I just didn't appreciate his "regular guy" routine and his master-of-the-obvious commentary like so many others did. John Madden has retired from broadcasting so he won't be providing commentary on NFL games this year. There you go John, that was my tribute to you in true John Madden fashion. For those of you who can't get enough of the big ole announcer, I leave you with a few of his best quotes: “When your arm gets hit, the ball is not going to go where you want it to.” “The fewer rules a coach has, the fewer rules there are for players to break.”“Hey, the offensive linemen are the biggest guys on
the field, they're bigger than everybody else, and that's what makes
them the biggest guys on the field.”"To get more yards, it's best to move the ball from the line of scrimmage down the field."
(Or my personal favorite)
"Usually the team with the most points wins the game."Good-bye to John Madden, you won't soon be forgotten. I'll remember you every time I see someone eating a drumstick and every time I hear someone say something that was totally obvious to everyone around him.

Not So Deep Thoughts: Kalas is "Outta Here!" but won't soon be forgotten
Posted by Tuff Stuff
Tough day in baseball yesterday, as two men who made major contributions to the game passed away. Former Detroit Tiger pitcher Mark "The Bird" Fidrych and radio and television broadcaster Harry Kalas both left us on Wednesday, but neither will be forgotten. I was a little too young to catch "The Bird" in his prime, but from everything I've learned over the years about the game, the unusual pitcher with the unusually quirky delivery came along at just the right time and provided a shot in the arm to a game that needed exactly that. His career produced just 29 victories before being cut short by several injuries, but before he flew off the diamond for the final time, he had already made a dramatic impact on the game. As for Kalas, he left his mark in the world of baseball and football. His trademark home run call, "Outta here!" will forever resonate in the Philadelphia area and throughout the country. Perhaps better known as the man behind the voice of "Inside the NFL" highlights, I can't think of the show going on without him. In all likelihood, the show will continue and a new voice will emerge, but to me, it will never be the same. In other news, I was reading how Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Sergio Garcia, Colin Montgomorie and Padraig Harrington are all lobbying to get golf recognized as an official Olympic sport for the 2016 games. Apparently the fairway heavyweights have all authored hand-written letters to the Olympic officials with hopes of beating out baseball, karate, rugby, and squash who are vying for a spot in the regular rotation. My prediction is the Olympic committee will listen to the cases being made for all the sports in the running and then make the obvious choice and give golf the nod. Tiger is the most recognizable athlete in the world today and easily the best at his sport. None of the other contenders would capture a worldwide audience like a Tiger-led field of golfers. And as we all know, the Olympics, like any other sporting event, are revenue driven, and Tiger equals ratings so to me it seems like a no-brainer. As for the other sports in contention, hurry up and find yourself a world class superstar and you might have a fighting chance. If not, better luck in 2020. Until then, you're "Outta here!"

Beat The Blogger Results
Posted by Tuff Stuff
It appears as though the Blogger could have used another week of vacation, posting just 4 correct responses and tossing out two questions after Brandon Webb (Question #5) got injured and posting a NASCAR-related pick (Question #7) with no race scheduled because of the holiday. Sorry for the confusion but the unusual week was no problem for "Peter," who posted a perfect card to win the weekly prize. This week's selctions will be posted on Wednesday so make sure you check back every day to read my 7th Inning Stretch Blog and to play Beat The Blogger.
For those unfamiliar with the Beat the Blogger contest,

Not So Deep Thoughts: God Can You Hear Me?, It's Me The Sports Collectibles Industry
Posted by Tuff Stuff
I was reading Trade Fax, one of our sister publications which is dedicated to bringing its readers the latest from the business side of the collectibles industry, and the news just keeps getting worse. The top story this week was that BC Sports, one of the bigg est sports collectible and licensed merchandise store chains in the country was closing the doors on all 50 of its retail shops. The industry has seen other stores clothes in the past few years but nothing even close to the impact of this latest set of closures. The company listed more than $10 million in debts and was forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Just when you think things couldn't get any worse, news like this surfaces and makes you wonder what will be next. I wish I had some positive news to help offset more of the doom and gloom but to be honest, I don't, and a I don't see anything in the near future either. The economy seems to have stabilized somewhat but the repercussions from the recent "depression" have dug some major holes to dig out from and it will likely take several years, several record-setting athletes, and some very creative thinking to help usher some new life into an industry on life support. Back in the 1980s when people spent money quickly and thought about the impact of their impulse buys later, no one predicted a collapse such as this, but overproduction and oversaturation have sucked the life out of a once flourishing hobby and I'm not sure the necessary IVs exist to rejuvenate it. Here's hoping things turnaround and quickly or all of us that love this hobby might end up drinking our sorrows away while we work on our new beer can collections. Anybody got that one-of-one 1979 Steel City can?

Beat The Blogger Picks

After a couple weeks without making any picks, the Blogger is fully rested and ready to make things difficult for those who dare challenge him in this week's Beat The Blogger contest.
