Not So Deep Thoughts: This Just In, Tiger Is Really Good
Posted by Tuff Stuff

In between the two lopsided NCAA games I surfed around the channels to find yet another rerun on the golf channel. No, I wasn't watching a taped version of an old tournament on the Golf Channel but I might have been viewing another Instant Classic from Tiger Woods.1Tiger.jpg

Trailing by five strokes heading into the final round of the Bay Hill Invitational, Tiger trailed up-and-coming youngster Sean O'Hair but when the smoke cleared in Orlando, Mr. Woods had somehow managed to pull off a one-stroke victory. Many had said it would take Woods several weeks to get back into Tiger-like form after knee surgery this offseason, but in typical Tiger fashion, he appears to be back at 100 percent in just his second event since returning to the Tour. Next stop The Masters and we all know about his history at Augusta so good luck to the rest of the field. Tiger is prowling again and that typically means trouble for the competition.

If there ever was a sure thing in the world of collectibles it would have to be Woods memorabilia. Fairly scarce considering the huge demand, Tiger collectibles come with a hefty price tag attached but unlike other superstars in the world of sports, Tiger memorabilia appars to be safe from scandal, injury and a decreased level of play at least for the forseeable future. With the economy on shaky ground and the stock market still a crapshoot, Tiger collectibles appears to be one of the safest investments available. Thousands have jumped on board the Tiger express but as with any bandwagon, there are always a few good seats still available. He's already the greatest golfer of all time and it doesn't appear he's ready to stop amazing us any time soon so jump on board while you can.

In other, less-interesting news, The Blogger is off to San Antonio 1images.jpgtomorrow for a week of fun in the sun courtesy of the best girlfriend a guy could ask for. I was dreading my 40th birthday for the last couple years as old age crept closer and closer but a birthday trip to play golf and enjoy some R&R with my best friend is one of the best ways I can think of to keep me feeling young and alive. So to my four loyal readers, I suggest getting out and enjoying some of your favorite things as well and I will return with my likely embarrassing scores from the links and some other notes from my trip on April 8.

Not So Deep Thoughts: Schilling HOF-bound?
Posted by Tuff Stuff

Heard like many others that Curt Schilling was calling it a career and it made me think of a couple of quick questions: What year is this? And didn't he do that like three or four years ago? Then the big one: Is he a Hall of Famer? I guess it depends on who you ask. Some will say you betcha, first-ballot all the way and others will crunch the numbers and compare him to others hurlers from past eras with similar stats and the debate will undoubtedly linger on til about 2012 when the decision will be made officially. Many despised the guy because he spoke his mind and many others loved the fact he wasn't able to shut his trap while virtually everybody else toed the company line and treated a post-game news conference like a cliche-fest. Love him or hate him, he was different and different is usually pretty good in my book.Schilling170fc.jpg

Schilling is 14th on the all-time strikeout list with more than 3,000 Ks, he won three World Series titles, pitched 83 complete games, made six All-Star appearances and won more than 200 games but I'm not convinced he's a sure-fire HOFer. I guess only time will tell, but I did appreciate his ability to step his game up when it mattered most and despite the fact that I often disagreed with the substance of what he was saying, I also appreciated the way he spoke his mind when few others would. Schilling often came across as a phony to me and I'm one who still believes the whole bloody sock incident was nothing more than a bloody scam that inflated his ego to mythical proportions, I can't dispute the ability he displayed on the mound.

In other news, it appears the Big East Conference is as good as advertised and then some. When the conference garnered seven teams and three top seeds in the tournament many scoffed that the league was overrated, but you'd have a hard time making that debate today after five of the seven teams advanced to the Sweet 16 and appear ready for a Final Four showdown that might end up being referred to as the Big East Tournament on steroids before the Madness comes to an end. Syracuse, UConn and Villanova have yet to really be tested and the early battles Louisville and Pitt have endured will only make them tougher down the stretch.

A decade or so the Big East was known more for its physical style of play and the 3-to-1 chance that a fight would break out at any moment. It didn't always get the top-notch athletes of the SEC or the ACC but was more about the sluggers who would fight you tooth and nail before squeeking out a 48-45 win. Now, things are different, very different. Teams from the Big East can beat you with a wide-open, showtime style of play, they can outhustle you and win in a half-court game, and they can still put on the gloves if needed and win a slugfest. It basically comes down to picking your poison with the end result being death to their opponents no matter how you break it down.

Don't agree? Let me know why. Step up and make a post and let your voice be heard. Click on comments and fire away.

Beat The Blogger Results, Let The Madness Begin
Posted by Tuff Stuff

First off, I'd like to apologize for any confusion created by the last question in last week's Beat The Blogger matchups regarding Kurt and Kyle Busch. I contest.jpgforgot the NASCAR boys took the week off and listed the question as of the 10 matchups. Fortunately my error didn't make a difference in the final standings for the week, as "Dan" got all 9 questions correct and nailed his doubler as well to win this week's prize. For his efforts Dan will receive an authentic signed 8-by-10 photo.

This week's Beat the Blogger contest will be made up entirely of NCAA Tournament matchups and will feature a prize package of nearly $500 worth of sports memorabilia including an authentic NBA basketball signed by the entire 2007-08 NBA Rookie class including last year's Rookie of the Year Kevin Durant and other top stars such as Greg Oden, Al Horford and Rodney Stuckey, Jeff Greene and many more.

Not So Deep Thoughts: Let The Madness Begin
Posted by Tuff Stuff

Anybody who knows me, knows that I'm a pretty laid back guy and it takes quite a bit to get me fired up about something. The one sure-fire event that does the trick every year is the NCAA Tournament. Unlike any other sporting event, the NCAA Tournament has it all. The thrills, the upsets, the emergence of star players, the electric atmosphere, the Davids, the 1NCAA.pngGoliaths, the smiles, the tears and let's not forget, the amazing over-the-top, ear-shattering tones of Gus Johnson. Ahh, the Madness, let the games begin.

There are so many levels in which the Tournament works it's hard to even begin to succinctly break it down, but I'll do my best to do so with a Letterman-esque Top-10 list guarantees that will come out of this year's Big Dance.

10. I guarantee Betty from accounting will post a better score in her brackets than you did despite the fact she made her picks based on the prettiest state flowers of the teams they represent, while you stayed up for four straight days breaking down all 65 team's RPI, strength of schedule, senior leadership, quality point guard play, travel distance and tournament history.

9.
I guarantee one of the No. 16 seeds will be getting 38 points from our friends in Vegas and it still won't be enough for you to win your bet.

8. I guarantee people from both coasts will watch several Big Ten schools BigTen.jpgplay their methodical, sleep-inducing brand of basketball and come to the conclusion that the conference is lite years behind power conferences such as the Big East, Big 12, ACC, Ohio Valley, Big Sky, Pac 10, Patriot and Mountain West. All right, I'm exaggerating a bit but you'll see what I mean next Thursday when Illinois jumps out to a 15-12 halftime lead over Sienna only to lose 32-30 in triple overtime.

7. I guarantee one player from a mid-major will put together two big 3Lundquits.jpggames, carry his team on his back to the Sweet 16 and Verne Lundquist will start talking about how he's "made the most of his 15 minutes of fame and that he can't wait to see how his game translates to the next level." Then, two years later, we'll read about the same player knocking over a couple liquor stores, getting in a high-speed police chase and trading in that 15 minutes of fame for 15 years in state prison.

6. I guarantee that despite a one-and-done performance, fans will go away from the Tournament knowing that Morehead St. University is actually a fine educational facility located in Eastern Kentucky instead of being the punch line of a poorly constructed joke.
4Morehead.jpg
5. I guarantee that some know-it-all in your office pool will rave about the fact that he was the only one who had Robert Morris pulling the first-round upset over a No. 2 seed, but will also fail to mention it was his only correct pick of his entire bracket.

4. I guarantee millions of basketball junkies will spend next Thursday and Friday pretending to work while following all of the early first-round matchups on their computers/Blackberrys, only to get fired when they start shouting expletives in the middle of the boss' quarterly budget meeting, effectively ending their charade and ultimately their careers.

3. I guarantee the terms "mid-major" and "selection committee" will be tossed around more in the next few weeks than "stimulus package" has been in the last year.

2. I guarantee that when the field of 65 teams is announced on Sunday that Dick Vitale will cry foul about how several teams were 2DickVitale1.jpgunjustly left out only to become speechless minutes later when asked which teams he would eliminate in order to get those teams in.

1. And the No. 1 guarantee heading into this year's NCAA Tournament is: I guarantee I will fill out several brackets for several different pools in an effort to win several hundred dollars only to be out of the running for every one of them by about 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon. But I also guarantee I'll be back doing it all over again next year at this time because there truly is nothing like March Madness.

Got some guarantees of your own, let's hear 'em, post them here.

Beat The Blogger Matchups
Posted by Tuff Stuff

While next week's March Madness version of Beat The Blogger will feature a prize package worth an estimated $500, this week's weekly contest will hopefully keep you entertained until the Madness begins. Congrats again to Art who won for the second time this season, correctly picking 10 of 10 and then scoring on his "doubler" pick as well to break the tie from the week before and score himself (2) signed photos in the process.

Look for more details about next week's March Madness starting on Monday with full details about how you could be the lucky winner of the prize package. Until then, study up on your NCAA Basketball and give this week's contest your best effort.

Beat The Blogger Results
Posted by Tuff Stuff

After a seven-person tie last week, we carried over the prize package to this week and "Art" is certainly glad we did. "Art" posted a perfect score of 11 after hitting all 10 matchups and nailing his doubler to Beat The Blogger and win the (2) authentic signed photos. The Blogger posted another solid effort with 9 of 10 correct picks but it was enough to hang with Art and his perfect card.contest.jpg

Look for our special March Madness version of Beat The Blogger coming next week. The special edition of the contest will be made up entirely of NCAA Tournament matchups and will carry over through the entire run of the tournament with the contest winner ultimately winning a prize package valued at more than $400. The prize package will include an authentic NBA basketball featuring the signatures of many of the top players in the 2007 NBA Draft including 2008 NBA Rookie of the Year and 2009 MVP candidate Kevin Durant among others. Each contestant will pick the winners of each tournament game with their total from each round of the NCAA Tournament carrying over with the highest cumulative total at the end of the tournament walking away with the NBA signed ball. Check back later this week for this week's regular Beat The Blogger matchups and more details about the NCAA Tournament contest.

Not So Deep Thoughts: TO show not playing in my home town
Posted by Tuff Stuff

Not sure if I fell asleep and woke up and it was 2004 again or what, but apparently another NFL team has severed ties with Terrell Owens and the future Hall of Famer is now looking for employment. Is it just me, or haven't we seen this show before?
owenstfc.jpg
It appears that signing the enigmatic Owens to a contract is much like getting really ripped and getting married in Las Vegas: It seems like a good idea at the time, but once your head clears and the bitching starts, you wonder what the hell you were thinking.

I'll admit that because he was such an amazing talent on the field, I have often overlooked all of the extra baggage Owens brought with him off of it. But no more. No more will I assume the now 35-year-old wideout will eventually grow up and become the team player that most in their mid 20s become. And no more will I blame any future blow-ups with teammates on the "other" guys. And no more will I defend a guy based soley on his talent level. And no more will I hope that Owens will sign with my favorite team, put his ever-increasing list of issues behind him and understand the concept of being a team member instead of being a member on a team. Those days are over, I'm done with TO and I don't care who hears me.

While I'm 100-percent committed to putting TO in the rear view, I know there will be several teams who fall into the trap of thinking Owens will get it this time, come into his new surroundings and simply play the game that he plays so well. They'll talk themselves into believing he will finally understand his days in the NFL are numbered and he needs to demonstrate the same type of professionalism on the sidelines and in the locker room as he does when between the lines. But they'll be wrong. TO, with help of his agent Drew Rosenhaus, will do and say all the right things early on but as soon as his new team alters its game plan to feature a receiver not named Owens, TO will take it way too personally like he always does and start to divide his new team like he has in the past.

It's a pattern of destruction usually reserved for episodes of Intervention, but the spinoff could be coming to an NFL city near you so be prepared for more of the same in 2009. If you think you've seen this show before it's because you have. It debuted in the San Francisco area a few years back and the syndicated version arrived in the Philadelphia area in 2004. If it seems familiar to you, that's because it is. Now, if I drive by my local theatre and Shrek 2 and Meet the Fockers are on the "Coming Next Week" sign, I'm really going to start freaking out.

Not So Deep Thoughts: Cleanest program in the country?
Posted by Tuff Stuff

Just had some random thoughts after thumbing through the sports section of today's newspapers and a few websites. Nothing really big going on in the sports world right now so I decided to tackle some of the back-page stories and give you my two cents.

At a recent practice session, first-year Marquette coach and one of the Buzz.JPGfinalists for NCAA Coach of the Year, Buzz Williams, was seen dishing out dollops of some type of gel to all of his players during a brief break in the action. Before all of you conspiracy theorists start racking your brain wondering what type of illegal substance the Golden Eagles coach was providing his players with, you can call off the investigation, it was merely a pre-emptive measure to keep his team healthy.

Because Marquette has been hit with a rash of illnesses in each of the last two seasons heading into the NCAA Tournament, Williams decided he would do whatever he could to keep his team intact this year, so the coach administered some hand sanitizer to his players in an effort to keep the germs at bay. Talk about a rookie coach making a veteran move. My prediction is that if Marquette can manage to have a solid showing in the Big East tourney and then win a couple of games in the big dance, Williams claims the Coach of the Year honors. If that doesn't work out he should definitely get the award for running the cleanest program in the country.

Is it just me or does it seem like Ed Hightower is refereeing every college basketball game ever played? Perhaps there is more than one guy named Hightower in the zebra stripes patrolling the hardwood but it seems like every NCAA hoops game I watch (and that's about 10-12 per week) has Hightower blowing the whistle.

$10000.jpgI read where Kurt Warner sent the Arizona Cardinals his proposed contract numbers and they included a "hometown discount" and a million-dollar reduction that would help them re-sign receiver Anquan Boldin. For every athlete that has ever held out for more, they should take note of Warner's actions. Here's a guy looking at the big picture and one who fully realizes he has enough green to last a lifetime and wants to keep the team that came up just short of winning the Super Bowl intact so they can try to make another run this season.

Beat The Blogger Picks
Posted by Tuff Stuff

After posting a perfect 10 of 10 in last week's contest, I looked forward to this week's picks with hopes of continuing the streak this time around but some tougher matchups will likely make that a difficult proposition. But here goes anyway.

Here are this week's Beat The Blogger matchups. Because nobody Beat The Blogger last week, this week's winner will receive (2) authentic signed 8-by-10 photos featuring the likes of LaDainian Tomlinson, Santonio Holmes, Gale Sayers, Drew Brees among others. With March Madness rapidly approaching, I went heavy on the NCAA matchups so you can all get some practice in before filling out your brackets in a couple weeks.

Last week several contestants including The Blogger himself, forgot to designate a "Doubler" pick to earn an extra point so learn from his mistake and make sure you don't forget to tag one of your picks as your "Doubler." It could mean the difference between 1st and 2nd place so don't underestimate the power of the "Doubler" and make sure you get your picks in a 1/2 hour before the start of the first game on Saturday to be eligible to win.

Spread the word about the contest to your friends and good luck.

Beat The Blogger Results
Posted by Tuff Stuff

The Blogger bounced back strong after several sub-par weeks but his forgetfulness proved costly, as he didn't designate a "doubler" which allowed several players who did to tie his score of 10.

contest.jpgThe Blogger went a perfect 10 for 10 but forgot to choose a doubler. Meanwhile, seven different players – Paul Sherman, Keith Sorenson, Shawn O'Grady, Louie Gallardo, Dave Karpinski, Greg Kuiper and Kent Chisler – each picked 9 of 10 correct and added one more with their doubler pick to tie the Blogger's total. Unfortunately for them, the name of the game is Beat The Blogger not Tie The Blogger, so there will be no winner this week and the prize will double to (2) authentic signed 8-by-10 photos for this week.

Congrats to the magnificent seven who tied for the top spot and thanks to everybody for playing. The matchups for this week will be posted on Tuesday so check back and get your picks locked in and whatever you do, don't forget to designate one of your picks a doubler.
