Not So Deep Thoughts: Shocker from MLB IDs Manny and Papi as cheaters
Posted by Tuff Stuff

syringe.jpgJust when you think you can't get caught any more off guard than hearing about Brett Favre's 180-degree wish-wash comes today's announcement that David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez were named on the list of steroid users from MLB's once-confidential list from 2003. This report continues to be leaked out to the media, with the NY Times making the latest claims.

The idea that Manny would show up on the list is nothing new. Most of us new of his guilt before his 50-game suspension early in the season, but Big Papi is a whole another story. For Ortiz, it was simply a matter of time before his past caught up with him and for all those who continued to support his innocence because he was never named on any previous lists, all I can say is "I told you so."

I guess it was because of the nickname. Or perhaps it was his teddy bear persona magnified by that captivating smile that kept many from believing he could have been one of the many cheaters, but c'mon people. A quick look at his HR totals from earlier this decade should've set off the alarms, but then again, it's hard to believe all of the heresay when the suspected cheater makes the type of comments Papi did. Earlier this season, Ortiz blasted MLB officials for making the new steroid policy too lenient. He wanted a year suspension instead of the 50 games that Manny got and although the policy remained intact despite Ortiz's public outcry, I think they should make a rare exception and give Papi what Papi wants. Bye, see ya in 2010. If you think I'm being overly critical, read Ortiz's comments below from February and get back to me.

(From February 17, 2009)

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- David Ortiz wants players who test positive for steroids to be suspended from baseball for a year instead of the current 50-game penalty.

Taking players to court, though, for cases involving use of the substances before players were subject to penalty is not the way to clean up the game, the Boston Red Sox designated hitter said Monday (Feb. 17, 2009).

"I would suggest everybody get tested, not random, everybody," he said. "You go team by team. You test everybody three, four times a year and that's about it."

And if a player tests positive for steroids?

"Ban 'em for the whole year," the slugger said.

The current penalties are a 50-game suspension for a player who tests positive once, 100 games for a second positive test for the same player and a lifetime ban for a third positive test, though a player can seek to return after two years.

Don't mean to get all Jeff Foxworthy on you but... When your HR totals double from 20 in 2002 to 41 in 2004 before maxing out at 54 in 2006, You're probably on steroids. When you hit 54 homers in 2006 and can barely get the ball out of the infield for most of the season just three years later and shortly after a new steroid policy is implemented, Your probably on steroids. If you come out and publicly condem MLB's current drug policy in the midst of accusations of your own steroid use, You're probably on steroids.

I guess Papi's condeming comments were an attempt to throw the dogs off or maybe he just denied using so many times with little effect that he felt he had to take it up a notch. Or perhaps he believes in the old George Costanza line of thinking: "It's not a lie if you believe it." Whatever it was, all it is now is another MLB star being outed as an imposter. And for somebody who hasn't been believing his BS for years, it's long overdue.

Beat The Blogger Picks
Posted by Tuff Stuff

The Blogger allowed plenty of contestants in the mix with a sub-par 5 of 10 effort but when the smoke cleared, it was Steve Emerick, Tim Beckham and John W. rose above all others. Both entries picked 8 of 10 picks including their doublers to take the top spot this week, Congrats to both of them and good luck to the rest of you this week. This week's picks are posted below.

For those unfamiliar with the Beat the Blogger contest, the idea is simple. The Blogger posts 10 matchups each week and then selects his choices focontest.jpgr the winners of those matchups. Contestants enter the Beat the Blogger contest by clicking on the "Comment" section below the post with the matchups and then select their own 10 winners. You can also designate one of your picks as a "Doubler" and you will receive an extra point if you're correct so don't forget to designate your "Doubler" pick and increase your chances of winning. If you Beat The Blogger's total and post the high score for the week, you win. The regular weekly prize is an authentic signed 8-by-10 color photo of stars such as LaDainian Tomlinson, Drew Brees, Marshall Faulk, Santonio Holmes, Gale Sayers, Catfish Hunter and many more. From time to time, the Blogger will sweeten the pot for the weekly contest and that's where the Chipper Jones jersey comes into play. If we can get more than 300 entries this week, the weekly winner will receive the Jones jersey so we need everybody to spread the word about the contest so we can reach our goal.

Not So Deep Thoughts: Favre's last stand
Posted by Tuff Stuff

I heard today's news that Brett Favre had decided against yet another comeback attempt and I got to tell you, I was a little sad about it. Although the Favre saga had become tiresome and bordered on comical as of late, I think I'm going to miss it if indeed this is it for old No. 4.

It took some time, but I had resigned myself to the fact that the man that led my Packers to the promise land was now going to be trying to do likewise for the hated Vikings. We had a good run and all good things must come to an end eventually, right? I was even resigned to the fact that if healthy, Favre would likely be making TD connections to guys named Berrian and Harvin instead of the familar Driver and Jennings hookups we Packer fans had been accustomed to. I had somehow managed to convince myself that I would actually root for him to do well in Minnesota (the two games vs. the Packers not withstanding) and went so far that I tried to help convince Favre-hating Vikings fans that they'd enjoy having old No. 4 in the home locker room. But this latest 180-degree reversal has really made it hard for me to stay in Favre's corner.

Throughout the last few years, I've watched a legend transform into a spoiled, selfish brat and I bit my tongue and favrebfc.jpgtempered my anger the whole time. With other sports primadonnas of this magnitude, players tend to get a little older, a little wiser and the subsequent maturation process helps them grow out of such actions. But not Favre, unorthodox until the end, he instead pulled a "Benjamin Buttons" on us and went the other way.

And speaking of movies, watching this latest Favre drama unfold left me in need of an intermission. I feel like I was watching a classic film which was followed up by a sub-par sequel. Like I was sucked back into giving the Three-quel a chance after it was applauded by the critics only to have the star get killed off in the first scene.

Hearing of Favre's latest decision to squelch another comeback before it officially ever got started was like seeing an old best friend for the first time in many years only to find out you now dislike the person he had become. His new persona makes you question if you really ever knew that friend very well in the first place. This ending definitely wasn't our undeniable hero, a man who's staying power and level of excellence was the very fabric of his being. This was just the latest and perhaps the final stain on the once-unblemished career of a living legend.

Sure the media, millions of unwavering and seemingly uneducated fans placed Favre on a do-know-wrong pedastal that he would inevitably tumble from. But even the haters out there would've hoped for a better ending to this movie because as much as you may love him or hate him, Brett Favre was something different, something special.

In time, we'll all forget the drama that followed him like the unrelenting pass rushers that chased him from sideline to sideline. In time, we'll forget how he turned his back on a fanbase and a franchise that helped define him. And in time, we'll remember him as the gun-slinging, risk-taking champion that he had become. Unfortunately after this latest and perhaps final flop, this classic masterpiece won't be remembered as such for quite some time. That script is still in development.

The Blogger improved to post 7 of 10 picks but it wasn't enough to deny Ray Maye a trip to the winner's circle. This week's matchups are posted below so make sure you get your picks posted before the start of the first game on Saturday to be eligible to win. Thanks for playing and spread the word.

Not So Deep Thoughts: Crystal Ball Time
Posted by Tuff Stuff

Over the past few months, I've unveiled some fearless predictions in this column. Some have come to fruition, others not so much. But the great thing about having a blog is that you can write almost anything you want and still have a space to write some more the next day. With that said, I decided to toss out a few more predictions with the new approach being, we'll revisit the predictions in the future and see exactly how things played out.

MLB
With the Trade Deadline just 10 days away, expect a flurry of activity as teams try and find that one/two pieces to the puzzle that will put themHalladay.jpg over the top. The biggest name available is Roy Halladay. While every team would love to acquire a top-of-the-rotation, innings hound ace like Halladay, only a few teams have the necessary resources to actually make the deal. My Brewers are one such team with several strong minor league gems in their system, but according to Milwaukee GM Doug Melvin, the Brewers aren't willing to part with SS of the future Alcides Escobar or 3B Matt Gamel, the two players the Blue Jays apparently covet. One possible deal that hasn't gotten much attention is Gamel and former All-Star shortstop J.J. Hardy in exchange for Halladay.

If the Blue Jays view Hardy as the hard-hitting defensive wizard he was last year the deal would make a lot of sense for both sides. Toronto would get a new, young left side of its infield and the Brewers would get an ace who could consistently take them deep into ballgames and allow young pitcher Yovani Gallardo to return to his role as the team's No. 2 starter because he has yet to display the consistency needed from a staff ace. I was leaning toward Halladay going to Philadelphia but the Phils are rolling and should have plenty of in-house talent to win the East. The slumping Hardy is slowly falling out of favor in Milwaukee and Escobar being the heir at short for the Brewers, I think Melvin rolls the dice one more time and pulls the trigger on the Halladay deal, calls up Escobar and hopes he can make a smooth transition to the bigs.

While I admit I'm a Brewers fan and would love to see Halladay come to Milwaukee, I'm not sure he would be enough to get the Crew into the postseason but the window of opportunity is wide open right now so why not take another shot. Besides, throughout Hardy's minor league career he was known as a defensive-minded shortstop that would have to learn how to hit major league pitching. He appeared to do that in 2007 and last season when he hit 24 HRs, knocked in 74 and batted .283, but perhaps this year's .226 average with 61 strikeouts is a better indication of what to expect from him?

Other players that will be relocated before the trade deadline will be Matt Holliday, Victor Martinez, Freddy Sanchez and left-handed reliever Scott Downs

NFL
Former Pro Bowl QB Michael Vick has finished paying his 23-month sentence for dogfighting charges but the next question is how will commisioner Roger Goodell handle his possible reinstatement. My prediction is that Goodell will come down with an iron fist and stays true to his past. He's been tough on players convicted before and let's not forget Vick straight up lied to his face before the trial when Goodell asked him point blank, "Did you do what they are accusing you of?" My guess is Roger hasn't fogetten that day and will make Vick pay a little more before he gets to take the field again. Prediction: Vick remains suspended for the first eight games of the season then signs with a playoff-contending team who needs an established veteran to make their postseason push, perhaps Carolina.

Let me hear what you think about these predictions and feel free to post some of your own. Then we'll check back and see who's crystal ball works and who's is cracked.

Not So Deep Thoughts: Close call for Upper Deck, but the right one
Posted by Tuff Stuff

In February, inside its 2009 Upper Deck Series One Baseball product, Upper Deck released a nine-card insert set entitled: “Historic Firsts Predictors.” The sports card company made nine bold predictions and stated that if any of them came true during the course of 2009 that it would “do something big.” One of those cards said the National league would break its 12-year drought and win the game.UPPER DECK NEW logo.jpg

Well, something big nearly happened. Upper Deck was ready to put into motion a special nationwide promotion that would have yielded a free baseball card pack to fans across the country (one per customer, while supplies last), provided the National League won last night's 80th MLB All-Star Game. Unfortunately for collectors nationwide, the trend continued and the National League All-Stars came up short once again, falling 4-3, in a well-played, but unspectacular Mid-Summer Classic.

For the Upper Deck crew, things couldn't have turned out any better. The company received some free publicity for the promotion, the game was competitive, and ultimately because of the outcome, they didn't spend a nickel and come out looking like the heroes in their efforts to make good on their original promise.

While the promise could've cost Upper Deck six figures if the senior circuit would've prevailed, the end result was priceless. They say in baseball that sometimes the best deals are the ones that were never made. In an apples-oranges kinda way, the same rule applies here. Hopefully the other manufacturers will apply this same model to events in the future with the only difference being that they're forced to come through and fufill the promotion so collectors can win as well. Kudos to Upper Deck for stepping up and taking a chance in the first place. Now, if they really want to come out smelling like a rose, they'll take half the packs they had earmarked to distribute and give them away anyway. Just a thought.

Gary Truman, Joann K, Jeff Barton, Dennis Juntunen, Ronald Borczyk, DeMarie and Yale M. Brown will all be receiving a prize for their efforts. It was the second straight week Joann K has won so a special congratulations goes out to her. Thanks for playing and spread the word.

I'll be posting this week's matchups later today so please check back later to make your picks.

In the meantime, I suggest reading my blog post below and make a prediction or two of your own or simply post why my predictions will never come to fruition.

For those unfamiliar with the Beat the Blogger contest, the idea is simple. The Blogger posts 10 matchups each week and then selects his choices for the winners of those matchups. Contestants enter the Beat the Blogger contest by clicking on the "Comment" section below the post with the matchups and then select their own 10 winners. You can also designate one of your picks as a "Doubler" and you will receive an extra point if you're correct so don't forget to designate your "contest.jpgDoubler" pick and increase your chances of winning.

Not So Deep Thoughts: Crystal Ball Time
Posted by Tuff Stuff

Because it's the All-Star break in baseball, the NFL is still out to lunch and the NBA's 10-month season is finally over, things get a little slow in the sports world this time of year. And when it gets slow, sportswriters and any sports media people tend to try and get a little creative to find (make) some news to pass the gameless nights. Unfortunately for the fans, that's sometimes not a real strong suit for the scribes.

Tonight we'll be treated (and I use that term loosely because it could end up being a 3-hour batting practice session or something monumental could happen see Josh Hamilton's 28 HRs in 2008) to the 2009 Home Run Derby sponsored by one of the few companies that still has some disposable income left (State Farm Insurance in case you wondered). I believe it gets decent ratings every year but that's only because MLB junkies need their fix and the Derby is the only dealer in town on this night (unless you enjoy Summer League NBA action, and god help you if you do).

I see where every expert this side of Chris Berman's second chin is predicting a winner so I decided to do likewise (here using the term "expert" looser than Lindsey Lohan's mouth after a six Appletinis) and give you my prediction for the Derby and a few others thrown in for good measure.

Crystal Ball Says:
Home Run Derby-
Despite being the last guy invited to the party, Tampa's Carlos Pena puts on a clinic in from of hometown favorites Albert Pujols and Ryan Howard to pull out the win. Logic would take all seven of the other competitors before putting your money down on Pena (could be the first-ever Derby strikeout victim as well) but my gut, eeer, Crystal Ball is showing a picture of Steve Irwin so I got to go with the guy from the Rays.

Pedro Martinez-Looks like the former Cy Young winner is on his way to Phiadelphia to try and help the champs repeat but unless he's back on the juice, I can't imagine how he can help. Last we saw Pedro, he was chucking 87-mph fastballs that won't even measure up with the overhand lobs being tossed tonight in the Derby. Unless he's regained about 6-7 mph on his fastball, the Dominican's version of Jamie Moyer will only be making a quick cameo appearance in Philly. I'm predicting one flash in the pan where Pedro gets some early run support and then coasts to an easy 8-5 win that looks way better than it was but still grabs the opening spot on Sportscenter that night on the nostaglia factor alone. You know the drill: ESPN cues up the Pedro circa-1995-99 highlights and then sprinkles in some of that night's highlights until so your confused he still matters when most of us know that can't be possible. You heard it here first, Pedro makes 5 starts, 1-4 with a 6.94 ERA before his body breaks down yet again. He then makes a half-hearted "I'm retiring for good this time speech" before getting angered by a press conference question about possible steroid use and runs off in search of Don Zimmer to take his aggressions out on.

Tiger Woods at The British Open-Had a tough time getting a clear picture in the Crystal Ball on this one but then saw a picture of Paris Hilton pop up. Still confused, but I think that was a sign to bank on another sure thing and Tiger is the only sure thing I know in the golf world. Actual prediction is Tiger wins in a three-hole playoff against an up-and-coming player (Anthony Kim perhaps) who's got enough talent to tame Tiger but not the mental toughness is takes to beat the best ever.

Crystal Ball is getting a little fuzzy. I shook it up but now it's just snowing inside and displaying a nativity scene. Kindy freaky, better shutter down.

Hyping Up Some Hoops: While I often attempt to be funny in my predictions, I can't be more serious about the following prediction. Sacramento Kings rookie Tyreke Evans is going to be good. Not LeBron James good, but special good. Like top-20 in the entire league good. If you're a basketball collector, jump on this bandwagon immediately or you'll kick yourself for the rest of your life. I'm predicting right now that he'll give Blake Griffin a run for his money in the ROY balloting and while the two are very different players, both will be special and Evans will be looked at as the steal of the 2009 Draft in two or three years. He scored 33 in Las Vegas League action last night and you can expect more of the same from the powerful 6-6 slasher who appears to be a man among boys and likely will all of next season as well.

Not So Deep Thoughts: Adultery is not the same as murder is it?
Posted by Tuff Stuff

As most of you have heard by now, former NFL MVP Steve McNair was shot and killed last weekend. McNair was killed by the 20-year-old girl he was having an affair with. While this type of news is unfortunately quite commonplace these days, it doesn't make it any easier to understand the backlash that has followed his death.McNair.jpg

I listened to several different sports talk shows and have read several different blog comments from fans who seem to have gotten adultery and murder confused because some of their comments were pretty harsh. Examples of those comments are: "He got what he deserved," "If you want to play, you've got to pay," I'm done with him and all the athletes like him that cheat."

That last one really got me. I guess all those high-and-mighty callers/bloggers are convinced they wouldn't stray from their own spouse if they were constantly given the opportunity to do so? Pulllllleeeeeese. While they are a small few of us who could continually resist temptation and stay true, most, like McNair and thousands of others before him, would fall short. By no means do I condone McNair's actions, I'm simply saying that all the couch potatoes out there need to come down from there high horse and stop kidding themselves. And while adultery is 100 percent unacceptable in my book, I don't think think the punishment for doing it should be one's life.

I believe the world-famous philosopher Chris Rock once said that "Men are only as faithful as their options," and he couldn't be more accurate for most men and most women for that matter. Star athletes have a ton of options when it comes to straying while Joe Couch Potato can only dream of hooking up with the hot college chick behind the counter at Wal-Mart. I guess that's why they tend to jump on the old high horse when making comments on a star athlete who actually does what he can only dream of both on and off the field. Pure jealousy is my interpretation.

McNair's pastor and close friend cautioned against judging the ex-NFL quarterback during his memorial, reminding people who gathered for his memorial not to cast the first stone when talking about his life off the field.

Amen to that. Not even Joe Couch Potato is perfect, even if he speaks as though he is.

Beat The Blogger Picks
Posted by Tuff Stuff

Because our die-hard Beat The Blogger players are fired up and ready to post their picks, I posted them a little earlier than normal this week. So take advantage of the extra time by studying up the matchups, making your picks and then you'll have the rest of the week to spread the word about the contest to all of your friends and co-workers so we can get a huge turnout. This week's matchups are below. As always, GOOD LUCK.

The Blogger's struggles continued
over the holiday weekend, as he managed to correctly pick 6 of 10 but plan on some much tougher competition in the coming weeks. I'm tired of just handing over the weekly prizes so easily and I now plan on doing my homework with my picks and making it more difficult to Beat The Blogger. Good luck folks, I think you're gonna need it.

For those unfamiliar with the Beat the Blogger contest, the idea is simple. The Blogger posts 10 matchups each week and then selects his choices for the winners of those matchups. Not So Deep Thoughts: Random Ramblings
Posted by Tuff Stuff

Just putting together this month's issue of Tuff Stuff when I decided to take a break and see what's going on in the sports world. I stumbled upon several interesting stories and felt compelled to give you my two cents on them. For those of you checking the blog to see if you were a winner in last week's Beat The Blogger contest, I'll have the results for you first thing Tuesday so please be patient and in the meantime, enjoy some random thoughts. C'mon, it won't kill you and you might even learn sBonds.jpgomething. Well, it definitely won't kill you, that I can guarantee.

Please Pass the Juice
Just took a quick look at some MLB stats and I noticed there are several established sluggers who are struggling this year and I can't help but think it might have something to do with MLB's new, tougher testing for performance-enhancing drugs. While most believe steroids and other PEDs turn singles hitters into Babe Ruth, the truth is, steroids and other PEDs help repair muscle tissue quicker which helps build stronger, more defined physiques, they also help with hand-eye coordination, which as most ballplayers would attest to, is far more important than being able to bench press an SUV. I'm not sayin guys like Jason Giambi (.197), David Ortiz (.225), Grady Sizemore (.231), Jay Bruce (.217), Dan Uggla (.223), Alfonso Soriano (.226) and Chris Young (.197) are no longer able to bat their weight because they miss the juice, I'm just sayin they sure do look thirsty at the plate these days.

Should I Stay Or Should I Go?
I read where Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade said he would be happy to $10000.jpgre-sign with Miami in 2011 if the Heat contend for the title this year. Is it just me or does this sound a bit odd? Wouldn't that equate to your mailman telling you he'll be back tomorrow if you go out and get one of those cool mail boxes that looks like an outhouse and costs about two grand? Wouldn't that be like me telling my boss I'll be back in when we become a Fortune 500 company? I realize that Wade is only stirring things up in an effort to persuade management to keep up with the Jones' (in this case the Lakers, Cavs and Celtics) and go out an sign an impact player but enough already. Heat management should tell Wade exactly what my boss would tell me if I went that route: Good riddance.

Instant Classic

When I was younger, I vowed never to start a sentence with: "When I was a kid, blah, blah, blah." But now that I'm older, I find myself looking at the sports world in that same reflective manner that I couldn't stand when it was uttered by my elders when I was a no-it-all school boy. Case in point came yesterday when I saw the highlights of the five-set marathon between Roger Federer and Andy Roddick in the Wimbledon final. I heard the guys on Sportscenter talking about epic battles and they started talking about the match as being one of the greatest in the history of the game. I'm no tennis authority by any means but I've watched a volley (the term volley means a shot in tennis where a player returns a shot before it hits the ground and proves I know a little somin, somin about the game) or two but instantly turned into my grandfather and started thinking of the classics from yesteryear. Borg vs. Connors, McEnroe vs. Becker ... Ah, who am I kidding, it's tennis and nobody cares, let's move on.

Favre Watch
I also read that Brett Favre was rumored to have been looking at a new favrebfc.jpgcondo in the Minneapolis area. Thank God I didn't miss that one because I was ready to check into the local clinic with a bad case of the Favre withdrawls. It had been almost 18 hours since my last Favre rumor disguised as a story and I needed my fix, baby. Actually, while I'm still a fan and wish him the best in Minnesota, I am growing a little tired of the 24-7 Favre coverage. Although the constant updates have subsided somewhat and are now at more of a Manny Ramirez pace, I can't help but wonder if Favre and his buddies sit around drinking beer in Mississippi and he gets all buzzed up and starts drunk dialing Buzz Cook (Favre's agent) until he final agrees to leak some information to the media regarding his return. The way I envision it, Favre lays down an over-under challenge with the boys on how soon before something appears on the ESPN crawl and then sneaks off to the bathroom and drunk dials Cook. His beer-swilling buddies tell him not even he has that kind of power, but end up losing the titles to their Ford 150s when Favre's prediction hits eight minutes later. While I do understand this is the information age and we all want our news yesterday, enough already. When Favre is five minutes away from making his first start with the Vikings, I'll start paying attention again. Until then, I'm good on the Favre watch.

Not So Deep Thoughts: UD getting licensed renewed from MLBPA not a surprise
Posted by Tuff Stuff

It was just announced the Major League Baseball Players Association renewed Upper Deck's trading card license. While the news may come as somewhat of a shock to some within the hobby, I never heard anything more than a few unsubstantiated rumors and now we know for sure they were just that.

The rumors that were circulating talked of an exclusive deal being UPPER DECK NEW logo.jpgformulated for either Topps or Panini, but that was likely based on pure speculation after the NBA's surprising decision to grant an exclusive license to newcomer Panini in the basketball card market. But the two sports couldn't be more different both on the playing field and within the hobby.

In its 20-year history with MLB, Upper Deck has produced some products that were both innovative and appealing to the eye at the same time. But more importantly from the MLBPA's standpoint was UD's commitment to growing the hobby and ultimately creating a new generation of collectors. In case you haven't noticed, kids of the last two decades or so have abandoned the hobby quicker than you can say World of Warcraft and the MLBPA was looking for the card companies to step up, spend some big-time dollars in an effort to get those kids back in the hobby.

Well, Upper Deck made a comittment to try and get the kids to stop tearing into zombies and gangsters and start tearing into packs instead and that effort made them an easy choice for getting the renewed deal with the MLBPA.

Not to say the other card companies haven't stepped up their recruiting efforts with kids as well, but UD's UpperDeckU virtual online game is actually something today's children can relate to, and most importantly, enjoy playing enough that they continue to come back to it. It's an innovative approach to attract the next generation of collectors. Much like UD's products were when they first hit the scene back in 1988, their new approach is different from most of the rest and that's what appears to have made it an instant success.

Beat The Blogger Picks
Posted by Tuff Stuff

The Blogger posted a solid effort, correctly picking 7 of 10 but it wasn't enough to hang with four contestants who totaled scores of nine to tie for the top spot in last week's Beat The Blogger contest.

John W, Joann, Dave and Steve Emerick each got 8 of their 10 picks correct and then utilized the Doubler to push their totals to 9 and win the weekly prize. For their efforts, all three will be receiving an 8-by-10 signed color photo.

Thanks to everybody for playing and good luck with your picks this week.

Not So Deep Thoughts: Steroid list leaked again
Posted by Tuff Stuff

The list of 103 names on the infamous 2003 steroid list is floating around in cyberspace but has yet to be confirmed. The list has surfaced on several sports blogs but comes with no evidence that the list below is the actual list of MLB players guilty of failing steroid tests back in 2003 or just an attempt to drum up some publicity for a website.syringe.jpg

If the list is the actual list, it comes with very few surprises as far as the players named and reads like a who's who of former and current MLB stars. I'm sure somewhere out there Bud Selig is demanding to know how this information continues to be leaked out and is likely questioning the timing of the leak as well, with the Mid-Summer Classic (All-Star Game) less than two weeks away and yet another black eye looming for MLB. This is supposed to be the time the game is being celebrated not ripped apart at every turn, but the funny thing is nobody seems to care. Much like when the steroid accusations began to surface back in the mid-to-late 90s. At that time, everybody (players, management, media, etc.) looked the other way on suspected steroid usage because the game was bouncing back from the work stoppage of 1994 and he turnstyles were spinning again.

MLBLOGO.jpgNow, the turnstyles are still spinning at a rapid rate despite steroid scandals coming our way faster than a Roger Clemen's sterioid-induced fastball and the general feeling among fans seems to be the same type of apathy demonstrated when the news first started to break more than a decade ago. Not sure if some fans' reaction (or lack thereof) is because they simply don't want to believe their beloved heroes could all be cheats or if they feel if they don't react to the news and voice their displeasure, the game will be able to put the scandals in the rear view quicker and move on from the tarnished days of rampant steroid use. Or maybe fans have had all the scandal they can take and they've now become immune to anything and everything that comes up with a negative connotation attached to it.

Whatever it is, it clearly demonstrates that baseball can bounce back from anything. Like a cockroach who shrugs off the repeated sprays of Raid, baseball's resilentcy is second to none. "America's Pastime: the cockroach of the sporting world." Now there's a marketing campaign I can wrap my arms around.
