2008-09 SPx Basketball
Posted by Tuff stuff

Ahh, smell that? There's a little SPx in the air, and it comes in the form of:

2008-09 SPx Basketball
  • 3 cards/pack
  • 10 packs/box ($155)

You know the drill with this product - it's loaded with memorabilia cards and autographs - and it should be for that price. There are at least one of these goodies in every pack.

So what did we find in our box of SPx Basketball? Read on, and then check out the video for the complete opening.

  • Dual Scripts: Sean Williams and Leon Powe (numbered to 50)
  • Robin Lopez "SPX" triple patch auto (numbered to 599)
  • J.J. Hickson "SPX" triple patch auto (numbered to 599)
  • 3 Freshman Orientation dual patch cards: Ryan Anderson ("RA"), O.J. Mayo ("OM") and Marreese Speights ("MS")
  • 2 Winning Materials Trios: Triple patch cards of Dwight Howard, Rashard Lewis and Carlos Arroyo and Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.
  • 2 Winning Materials dual patch cards: Elton Brand and Brandon Roy.

Nothing out of this world, but a fun box to open with a "hit" in every pack.

Donruss Sports Legends
Posted by Tuff stuff

It's always fun to break open a new product in the sports card hobby. And when I'm talking about new product here, I'm talking about:

Donruss Sports Legends
  • 5 cards/pack
  • 10 packs/box ($85)

The idea behind this set is to feature, well, sports legends. These include athletes in all sports, from bowling to gymnastics to pool. The allure, of course, is to snag some great patch and autographed cards of some of these legends. Personally, I think getting a card of Dolph Schayes is cool in and of itself.

Anyway, here are some of the "hits" from this box:

  • Professional bowler Pete Weber auto (numbered to 458)
  • Olympic softball pitcher Cat Osterman auto (Numbered to 493)
  • Rick Majerus sweater patch card (numbered to 400 - image the number of patch cards could be made from a Majerus sweater)
  • Elvin Hayes patch card (numbered to 250)
  • Sheryl Swoopes red parallel (numbered to 250)
  • Eddie Murray blue parallel (numbered to 100)

Other inserts numbered to 1,000 included a "College Heroes" Dan Issel, "Museum Collection" Cale Yarborough and a "Champions" Jean Cruguet.

For the rest of the break, watch the video below:

Topps Tip-Off Basketball
Posted by Tuff stuff

So you can look like your favorite NBA player with tatoos, here comes:

Topps Tip-Off Basketball
  • 6 cards/pack
  • 36 packs/box ($35)

Nah, tatoos aren't the only thing to look forward to in Topps Tip-Off. This is a great set for set builders, and each pack offers a parallel card. Plus, there are rookie autographs in the product.

All of our parallels were the red variety, numbered to 2,008. Two exceptions were gold parallels numbered to 99 of Hakim Warrick and David Lee.

For the rest of the action, check out the video below:

If you're looking for the latest baseball prospects from the latest college draft, look no further than:

Donruss Elite Extra Edition Baseball

You have to be a pretty die-hard baseball fan/collector to know who most of these players are, as many just enjoyed their first taste of professional ball - most in the lower ranks. That said, here are the "hits." Let's see when these guys start becoming household names!

  • 1 Collegiate Patch auto: Ryan Perry (numbered to 248)
  • 4 autos: Niko Vasquez (numbered to 494), Tim Federowicz (numbered to 844), Yeicok Calderon (numbered to 819) and Ike Davis (numbered to 995)

Topps Co-Signers Basketball
Posted by Tuff stuff

With a name like Co-Signers, you know what you're after - autographs. So what did we get? Well, see for yourself, when we open:

Topps Co-Signers 2008-09 Basketball
  • 6 cards/pack
  • 10 packs/box ($80)

The draw for this product is rookie cards, parallels and the big tickets - one rookie autograph and one co-signers autograph.

Our rookie autograph was Donte Greene (numbered to 350).

Our Co-Signers card was John Havlicek/Jo Jo White (numbered to 5).

There were also some nice parallel cards:
  • 1 bronze refractor: Al Jefferson (numbered to 50)
  • 1 gold: Greg Oden (numbered to 99)
  • 2 silver: Anderson Varejao and Mike Miller (numbered to 199)
  • 2 bronze: Jamal Crawford and Mike Taylor (numbered to 299)

Topps Letterman Football
Posted by Tuff stuff

Has it really been two weeks since we posted any breaks? Well, we apologize for that. However, we have some great product to showcase, starting with:

Topps Letterman Football
  • 4 cards/pack
  • 3 packs/box ($170)

I know what you're thinking - $170 for 12 cards?! Well, you want "hits" with your product right? This brand has some good hits.

Let's start with the Jake Long auto patch card numbered to 75. Not good enough?

How about a Chris Long "72" mega swatch card numbered to 25?

Hmm. Well, we also busted a James Hardy Letterman "card" numbered to 10. Did I mention it's not just a card, but his name spelled out: H-A-R-D-Y with his autograph on the "H" card. That's probably the coolest card we've ever pulled, just for its novelty.

The other nine cards were:
  • Dustin Keller (numbered to 419)
  • Aquib Talib (numbered to 419)
  • Steve Slaton (numbered to 419)
  • Chad Johnson (numbered to 949)
  • Larry Fitzgerald (numbered to 949)
  • Adrian Peterson (numbered to 949)
  • Peyton Manning (numbered to 949)
  • Brett Favre (numbered to 949)
  • Andre Johnson (numbered to 949).

Whew, that was fun for just 12 cards. Now if you don't believe us, watch the video:

Upper Deck Masterpieces Football
Posted by Tuff stuff

We wanted to get a little more cultured here on Bustin Wax, so we ripped open a box of:

2008 Upper Deck Masterpieces Football
  • 6 cards/pack
  • 12 packs/box ($75)

In case you're not familiar, the idea behind this product is to offer painting portrait-like images of the players on the cards. Like miniature works of art on canvas, with credit given to the artists in some cases. Some like it, some don't, but you get a good mix of past, present and future stars.

Here is what we found in this box:

  • Jordy Nelson Stroke of Genius auto card (black frame)
  • Dwayne Bowe patch card (green frame)
  • Chad Johnson patch card (green frame)
  • 4 black frame: Vince Young, Lester Hayes, Chris Long and Walter Payton
  • 2 red frame: LaDainian Tomlinson (numbered to 199) and Mario Manningham (numbered to 199)
  • 1 brown frame: Matt Forte (numbered to 25)

And now on to the video:

Bowman Draft Picks & Stars Basketball
Posted by Tuff stuff

We looked for one-of-one autograph patch cards in Bowman Draft Picks & Stars Basketball, but we didn't find any.

What we did find in the $65 box (18 packs at 6 cards per pack) were the stud rookies hoops players just now getting their feet wet in the NBA.

The video below will tell the story of this box opening, but we did get a few hits:

  • J.R. Giddens autograph
  • Dwight Howard relic card
  • Al Horford relic card
  • Greg Oden orange Bowman (numbered to 299)
  • 3 Blue Bowmans: Chris Douglas-Roberts, Richard Hamilton and Mike Miller (all numbered to 499).

Check out the video to see the rest:
